2000 Malibu 3.1 w/ 83,000 miles on it.

Driving at 45 miles per hour, my car will be at 4500 to 5000 RPM. This is sucking up gas fast, and I need it fixed. Since summer is coming, the car could/will over heat fast.

Also, I have oil in the coolant. No coolant in the oil, just oil in the coolant. I hope to replace the intake gaskets and head gaskets soon. Will doing a coolant flush help keep the temp down until then?

i assume that you are not driving your car in D1 or D2, cause if you are then thats why the rpms are so high, if you are in regular drive then it sounds like your trans is not shifting right, i would check the fluid level first but if that is good then you have a serious problem with your trans, and it sounds like its time to replace the gasgets... lol

I am hoping it not a serious trans problem... I drive in regular drive, not d1 or d2.

About 5 months ago, this problem started here and there. For about a week. Then it ran fine. Next, a motor mount busted, and after that was fixed, the car surged allot. We replaced the lower o2 sensor, and the crankshaft sensor, and the surging stopped, but the high RPM is back. Never had a trans fluid leak.

I guess I better ask around for a good trans repair shop, and start the testing.

Well my friend you have a crack and or busted Lower Intake Gasket.

It is a chore to replace and you will have to get the Gasket Kit. You cannot just replace the Upper and Lower Intake Gasket by themselves. You will have to replace all the Gaskets on the Upper part of your engine. You might as well go ahead and replace your Head Gasket and take the head and get it checked out while you have the top part of the engine broken down. You can buy the kit that will have everything that you need. It have to determine if it is the "J" or "W" engine and tell them at your local auto part store. The kit will cost about $160 give or take a few bucks. The "J" type is cheaper than the "W" type, but, it is a must that you determine which on it is. You can do this by the VIN number.

You can also get a Hanes Manual and it will tell you the step by step procedures on how to do it. But, be very sure not to mix up the Rocker Arm Push Rods. They are 2 different sizes. 5 3/4" and 6". The 5 3/4" are for the intake and the 6" in for the exhaust. The wil be a total of 12 of them. 6 a piece of each size. The best thing to do is when you pull them out? Take them out one by one and measure them and use 2 different colors of tape. Use one color for the intake and one color for the exhaust. Besure to keep them in order as well. You can either number them or use a piece of cardboards and poke holes in it and place the Rods in there in the order at which you pull them out.

I am sorry to give you some bad news. You can look through the other threads here about the Intakes Gaskets and wage a complaint to GM about it.

Good Luck and Godspeed to you.

Oil in the coolant maybe coming from the transmission cooler, coolant in the transmission means all the clutches are shot.:frown:

slls,

Could this mean that the oil in the coolant doesn't have to be motor (engine) oil??

Ya, the car drives great, until you hit the 35 mph, and then the RPM's run high after that. Like the trany is not shifting again!

:dunno:

Yeah sounds like tranny problems, it should be going into 4th/Od at that speed as long as you are taking it easy

OK, here is my problem...

I took my malibu to a shop, and the radiator is leaking fluid into the trans, and the trans in leaking oil into the coolant. He says the cars computer is telling it to shift, and the parts are recieving the instructions to shift, but the coolants is preventing it from shifting!

So, how hard is it to fluch the motor out, and replace the radiator?
