Fuel mileage, again...

I know this is one of many threads about fuel mileage, but mine is a little different...I have a 1998 4X4 short bed tacoma. I was wondering what the average miles per tank that people may have been experiencing. My BEST is probably only about 270 to 290 miles per tank. Now, that is a BEST of roughly 16 to 17 miles per gallon. That is being CONSERVATIVE! Usually I will get about 240 per tank. I was thinking the O2 sensor may need to be replaced.

MODIFICATIONS:

K&N air intake assembly
LC Engineering cat back exhaust

Even with an empty bed I usually dont get more that 17 miles per gallon.

So, what are other tacoma drivers experiencing with the 3RZ, heck even the six cylinder?

The very best I could muster was 300 to a 15.5 gal tank. I have a v6 and had to drive like senior citizen to achieve that.

The mileage you get depends on lots of variables. You didn't state your driving conditions, temperature, short or long runs. Do you have over-sized wheels and tires? Is your driving done in town with lots of stop lights or out in the open? Are the roads you drive on hilly or flat? Most important, how do you drive? I looked at your post, but you don't provide enough information for a valid comparison. That said, I have a 2004 Extra cab 2 wheel drive with 2RZ engine and automatic. If I tank up and drive locally on short runs in cool weather I get 18-20 mpg. On longer runs, one hour or longer I get 23-24 mpg. We live in a hilly area. I'm a senior citizen, but I do keep up with traffic.

well that sucks that i get worst gas mileage than you and have to 'baby' it when aspiring to get to 300 miles per tank. AND, i dont have the ex cab. still 3rz though.

to you who asked the ''hilly'' question. i do a lot of flat driving with 30% town 70% highway driving. 31" tires and to get NEAR 300 miles per tank i have to baby it usually get 225-250 miles per tank on any given situation.

98 extcab 4x4 3rz on 31s. I was getting around 21 freeway and 19-20 mixed driving.

I just changed out the old denso plugs for new denso iridiums. The way the old plugs looked, I hope I get a mile or two better. I also got a new air filter.

Runs and looks amazing for 204k miles.

'01 Tacoma x-tra cab 4x4 6 cyl. with commercial ARE truck cap gets around 17.5 to 18.5 mpg or 280-300 miles per tank before filling up again.
