97-up GP come with basically 4 engine choices.
3.1 vin-M fit 97-99 (rpo code L82) base engine SE model
3.1 vin-J fit 00-03 (rpo code LG8) base engine SE model
3.8 vin-K 97-03 (rpo code L36) Normally aspirated, only engine in GT model
3.8 vin-1 97-03 (rpo code L67) Supercharged, GTP model only
The 2 3.1's differ only in the intake/upper plenum area. That is why the RPO code and vin designation change.
The only two 3.8's used were the naturally aspirated vin-K and supercharged vin-1
I could be mistaken, but if you have the 3.8-1, your car is a GTP, they didn't offer that engine in a GT

Rich is correct in the data provided. To make it simple your engine option is the 8th digit from left to right of the VIN number.

I have a GT too, and I'm very happy with it. There isn't a day goes by that I don't wish I had the extra power of a GTP, but I like the cheaper gas. My next Grand Prix will be a GTP though. Then Bob's gonna hate me for asking him how to mod it all the time,

Thanks for the correction theblurr87, I can't believe I forgot to put that in there. Thanks Bob for also including which digit of the VIN denotes the engine option. Just FYI, if there's any info on your car (option codes, does it have this or that, etc...), I can decipher any GM vin# for any vehicle 91-up (some 90 models too).

hah, thanks guys..yea, 8th digit in is a K..thats pretty cool that you can tell so much from the VIN. Rich dont worry when you're bothering bob about your GTP i'll be sure to bother you about my GT.. it'll be a vicious cycle, lol
