94 achieva timing SOHC Quad 4

I have a SOHC quad 4 in a 94 achieva. I accelearted to pull onto freeway in traffic. Car responded well and leveled out at 55 mph. I drove like this for a couple miles and it just started to bog down. I pulled over onto an exit ramp right away and it died at the stop. I was able to start it to pull it off the road, but it runs like the timing is way off. I assume I slipped the timing change or damaged the tensioner or guide or ??. I have spoke to a few places that just shake their head and won't touch it or want major $$$. I have heard that if it slipped it could have caused major damage. I have also heard that it may be the ignition module or crank sensor? Any ideas on how to troubleshoot without spending a ton on something that may have seen it's last highway?
