reading codes without a code reader

I have a 91 Ford PU and a 97 Chrysler T&C from which I can extract codes without a code reader. Having been a used car dealer for several years, I learned how to do both. However, I quit the car business in 98 and am not familiar with newer vehicles. (I'm one who believes if you have good running vehicles why buy a newer one! Hence the older vehicles. :grinyes:)

My son-in-law has a 2000 S10 pu with engine light on. Is there a way to jump the pins on the connector to read the codes as I do with my 91 pu? I have searched the web and find nothing on the subject. Does it require a code reader? :screwy:

I greatly appreciate any input!

Thanks for the replies. I knew about AZ reading codes free. I was hoping there was a way to read them using the ck engine light without a reader. If not, AZ here we come!

Thanks again.
