Tranmission Selector

I have a 1995 Nissan Altima Automatic with 130k miles on it. I'm having a very difficult time starting the car.

The car never turns during the first time when I turn the key. I have to shake the the transmission selector a lot or move the Selector in and out of P in order to start the car. Sometimes I have to put the transmission in N in order for the car to start.

Can somebody tell me what I can do in order to get my car to start properly? I'm hoping this isn't a severe problem.

Thanks,
B

Take a look at this picture of a 95 Altima Nuetral Safety Switch.

You may be able solve the problem by adjusting the switch. A new switch also needs to be set according to the adjustment procedure useing a drill-bit to align the indexing hole at the end of the lever with the pilot hole before final tightening.
