Oxygen Sensor

Howdy y'all
Got a 86 325 with an idle that bugs the crap out of me. when it is cold the engine runs like a raped ape. I just rebuilt the engine at 200k because of a leaky number 6, and replaced a reference senser. my question is the oxygen sensor? when it is hot the car seems tough to start with a slow power up, the idle goes from 900 to 1200 rpm and surges at stops, it also seems i am losing alot of fuel with an oder from the exhaust. do i need one, or what else am i missing? please help me; this idle is making my neck sweat...:bloated:
