Are you sure the pump is actually bad?
Can you hear the pump run for 2-3 seconds when you trun the key to "on"?
You may have a bad cam or crank position sensor, if so this would cut off the power to the fuel and ignition by shutting down the ASD relay.

no its not coming on,this is the second one thats burned out
it came out of a dakota with 183,000 miles and it was sitting for a year but the gas was fine and there was no deposits on the fuel pump and it ran fine,
the motor runs great so maybe the crank sensor but i dunno it,after the first one went i put this one in and everthing seemed fine.

That's too many miles for a used pump...go with a new one but not from Autozone unless you want to replace it every month again. I recommend trying an onlin Dodge dealer like www.makeitmopar.com it looks like they sell the complete module for $191 plus shipping..Autozone gets $160 for their junk, so it's worth the extra bucks to get the original.

Time for a brand new fuel pump module with the in tank strainer, you must also replace any inline fuel filter to make sure bits and pieces of the old pump are not in it. If you have junk from the old pump in the inline filter the excessive backpressure will fry the new pump. Also flush the gas tank.

I have the same problem..however I get good spark, can dump a bit of fuel in the throttlebody and it will fire right up, but cant hear the fuel pump whine when to pre-pressurize the fuel line, I know the fuel pump works
When the truck cools down, it will randomly whine when I flip the key switch, other times it wont
Can the fuel relay get old or go bad after time? I have switched relays out in the box in the engine well...but it still wont work, sometimes it does, sometimes it wont, but once it works it works fine and will stay running no problems
Oh yah..I have a '92 Dakota with the 5.2L 318V8
