1988 Supra

I have never bought a toyota before, looking very seriously at an 1988 with Targa, no turbo, it is in excellent condition, no rust, interior is perfect, 99000 miles. They are asking $3200.00. New timing chain, new brakes, tires have less than 5000 miles on them.

I will be driving it later this afternoon, anything I should look for as far as problems?

Thanks,
Sid

Have a look at the targa top. The seals wear out and leak.

Has the water pump been replaced?

How old is the clutch?

TCMAboy, thanks for responding. The Supra is not in as good of shape as we originally thought. There is water leaking in the hatchback, wet carpet, rusty water standing, the targa cover has been caulked, we didn't even attempt to remove them, there is a nasty paint job on it, with rust under the trim behind the front wheels. Lastly, it shifts terrible, hitting 3rd gear was next to impossible, very tight shift pattern, and it would just not go into 3rd under any power.

Any ideas on the shifter? Maybe a bent fork?

Any input would be appreciated.

Just pass. If you really want it for a project car then offer $500 or so.

I agree, that sounds like something you may want to stay away from. For $3200 you can do better. Supra's aren't cheap to repair but can make for a fun project car. I doubt he's sell it for $500 if he's asking 3200.That's almost 1/7 of the asking price.
