Possible new ECU

Well been a while since I have posted. Parked the car for the winter. Just as I parked it the charge lights came on.

The Alt still charges, but apparently only when the VR tells it too...and it only does it when it wants too.

Word has it...my ECU controls the voltage regulator. Is this true? Will I need a new ECU?

Take it to autozone and have them check the battery and the alternator for free. Jumping to conclusions about the ECU can be (and usually is) a very costly mistake.

Well, got it all tested at Parts Source today. Said its all fine...something they did mention though...diodes might be causing problems.

BAh..I say.

I went home and thought about it. The ECU cycles just like any other on the market and looks for faults or errors. The lights and no charge seem to happen everyonce in a while and stay for a certain period of time, but goes away.

Here is what I found was happening.

My engine idle was too low, this caused the alternator to NOT charge at idle. This would throw a code that the ECU saw. Once it did this, the lights would stay on until the code was seen as clear. The lights then went out.

I then checked the idle on the car...the idle adjustment screw had fallen out :(...this caused the low idle and sticking gas pedal problem I was having. Once adjusted..no more charge problems.

Beside the throttle plate. Near the firewall. Must be accessed from the passenger side. Where the air cleaner hose hooks up to the manifold.
