exhaust problems

Okay so my 2nd gen is in neutral (the clutch is disengauged) and I rev the engine, everything sounds fine...

When I put the car into any gear and drive I hear a loud nasty sound... (similar to that of a whole in my exhaust system or muffler or something...)

However when I push the clutch down or the car is in neutral and I rev the engine there isnt any abnormal noise...

Any input?

What kind of "loud nasty sound" is it? Like a rattling sound?

check for an exhaust leak. I had one and driving around it would sound like a 4cylinder honda.

No no rattling sound...

Allthough I have had rattling but its always been a loose heat shield..


This sound basically magnifies the exhaust sound by like 20, it makes it sound really really loud and annoying. No rattling.


How doI cHECK for an exhaust leak?

If you have the car at idle, get out of your car and listen for a hiss somewhere in the exhaust system.

an exhaust leak doesn't rattle, it just sound BAD...

the best way to check is just check all the places it could leak. Look at manifold to head bolts, make sure they're on tight, then check the manifold to turbo bolts, ALOT oftimes those bolts stretch and wiggle themselves out, then check your turbo to 02 housing, then the 02housing to downpipe, then downpipe to cat...

If you STILL can't find it let me know, I happen to know of a rather unorthodox way of finding one ;)

well thanks I will be taking it to a shop, my manifolds bolts are all rusted to hell. The shop will tell me whats wrong for no cost, then I will have the prob set.

Meanwhile I will check around my self, but the car makes no abnormal sounds when idling or in neutral even if the engine is reved, which is hard for me to understand.
