Brake Job (Drums)

Can anyone tell me how to re-attach the emergency cable to the lever? I've tried pulling the spring back from the cable end so I can re-insert it in the brake lever but I can't pull the spring back over the cable far enough to clear the thickness of the lever. Any ideas?
