Transmission Chatter

I have a 94 camaro Z28 with the 4L60E transmission in it.. I can not figure out what is going wrong with it... heres the deal... While i am accelerating very very lightly at around 25-30mph i hear a chatter coming from under the car.. im not sure if its coming from the front or back.. could this be my torque converter not locking up or something.. I had my trans rebuilt about 8000 miles ago and since then been pretty much driving normally.. When rebuilt they put a rebuilt torque converter in it, along with all new clutches, a new 1-2 solenoid, a new sprag, and a few more things.. The chattering sounds like its metal to metal.. almost liek the driveshafts hitting something. but its not... could this be a possible u joint problem or a torque converter problem... any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds more like a heat shield with a cracked weld.

Only other thing is a loose T/C, but at look at the shields first.

mine used to chatter badly when accelerating or when parked, and it turned out to be just a loose exhaust hanger

yup.. mine did the same.. BUT it only did it when going from 3rd to OD.. whenever it went into OD it would chatter.. and it WAS a heat shield.. no more noise. :cwm27:

i agree, cuz if it was something in the drivetrain you'd not only hear it, but you'd likely feel it as well. do you feel anything when it makes the noise?

i dont really feel anything.. its hard to determine what part of the car its coming from.. but its def somewhere by the transmission or the rear end.. the trans is kind of sluggish along with a delay in shifting into 4th gear.. in order to shift in to fourth i have to back off the throttle almost all the way and then it will go into 4th.. could it be a u joint? maybe a bad Torque converter causing the noise?

If it were a bad u-joint, you would feel a 'shock' when it is put into gear. to confirm it anyways you need to check the driveshaft for excessive play, you shouldn't be able to turn it by hand very far at all.

I'm sticking to what I said, your catalytic converter runs right next to the trans, and the muffler is right at the rear. Both are sheilded, as some one else mentioned the hanger locations.

Mine used to chatter too. Sometimes while just sitting idleing sometimes while driving at low speeds.
after a lot of checking i finally narrowed it down to the bearing in the belt tensioner / idler sheave.
