When you guys paint your bodies, what kinda of sprays do you use? tamiya spray paints? I dont want to airbrush. I was on tamiya's web page and am wondering what paints to buy to paint the body on my tamiya opel astra kit. any links would help.

They're called Tamiya Sprays, they are round cylinders with color-coded caps wrapped in plastic with stickers on them telling you what color it is

how about decals, what kind of methods do you guys prefer? Im about to start my first model car and I belive with the proper research from this forum, I can make it look awsome. Another question. Would the average model shop have car model primer? For instance does tamiya actually make a primer for models? Where do you guys buy your primer.

- Thanks in advance, Mitch

Hey there 18Visions. For primer, I just use automotive primer. You can get that usually at any automotive store. It's Dupi-color and it comes in grey or white. Use the white for lighter colors, just to make sure the grey color doesn't bleed through. (although I've never had any problems with the grey bleeding through) What you also should get while you're at the automotive store is some fine grit sandpaper, like 1500 and 2000 grit. Get your car body all primered up and then sand it to a smooth, glass like finish. Then repeat. I usually do 4 coats of primer. But that all depends on how much you want to do, personal preferences, all that. And when you're done with the primer WAIT a couple of days. The primer needs to "gas out", and it will wreck your paint job if you do it too soon.

Hope some of this babble will help ya, and welcome! This is a really great place for info, and I'm new here also! Peace out.

yes ive read all the tutorials/faqs in here. But what im really asking is this. Primea man. On your opel astra, what kind of primer did you buy, like what brand/make/which store. Is what im asking. Also did you use the exact colors from the tamiya manual? And you used just the normal tamiya sprays correct? I'm basically just looking for exact product names/stores you buy them from.

Tamiya makes everything you need to make their models. primer, sand paper, polishing compound... you name it, they have it. but like anything out there, they have competition from other companies. many people prefer not using the some of the tamiya products for a variety of reasons. they mainly stick to a method that works for them through trial and error. I hate to say it but you will learn alot from the first model you make. and chances are you will make mistakes, but thats the way you learn. if you have a hobby shop around you take a good stroll through the place to see exactly what they carry. they may have some tamiya products but they may not carry them all. for instance, the shop i go to does not carry tamiya primer, glues, sand papers, or compound. I either go to another shop further away or i order them online. its all about experience. you'll need some skill to make models but to really make great models, you can do it without experience. Hope that helps. Have fun!

getting the exact products most people use wont get wont make you a better modeler. You Can use Tamiya Primer, It coems in gray and white. I suggest using white for light color not because gray will bleed, it wont, it will darker your color. Some of us are smart and get different shades of one paint by using different primers.

I suggest you look in the Paint chart, everything thats there should be carried by your hobby shop, the TS-## are spray cans and the X-## are little bottles(they are all tamiya). Testors paints are also good as long as you stick with enamel. you dont HAVE to get all the colors in the book, My first modelw as done with ONE black, ONE Silver. nowdays I use Flat Black, Satin Black, Semi Gloss Black, Rubber Black. allumnium, silver, chrome, gunmetal.......but for a first car I dont think thats required.

if you want you can use Automtive primers, there are hundreds of brands, I have no idea where you are so I dont know what brands you have.

OK! great someone hit the nail on the head. All I needed to know was where to shop for primer (and you answered that). Thanks a ton! I have a pretty extensive modeling shope so i hope they have the primer. As for the sanding, I have a belt sander so im ok there. LOL... canadian tire should stock the wet/low grade papers. Thanks a ton fellas

PS: if it comes down to it where do you order your model Primer from.

There are a few: snap plastic kits, metal-body kits, and at least one complete 1/24 metal pre-assembled cars. The recent ones are almost all Crown Vics with various markings. (I like the CHP ones... ;))

I supose if you screwed up a model and where into military models. you could trash it and add it to a diaroma with some military soliders hiding behind it or shooting over it.
