Do it yourself EEC-V interface to read codes from a 96 ranger

I dont feel like shelling out $50 to have some auto repair shop read my check engine light code, and I have good electronic skills and equipment. Anybody know of a way to interface the EEC-V OBDII connector to a standard RS-232 port and read the codes?

schematics? pinouts?

I ran across this site awhile back and seems to have a lot of good info. They have a chip with the ASCII codes built in to interpret the data from the OBDII connector which saves you programming time. Although they sell the chip, they have a schematic which will give you the complete hookup for all the different protocols between manufacturers. So, you can build your own unit and do the programming. That also includes the interface components between OBDII and RS232. You may want to start looking at this product first. "ELM327 - OBD to RS232 Interpreter". This will take care of all the protocols between manufacturers. Lots of info on their site....check them out and see what you think.
