Well how you doin guys? Im new in this thread so it's nice to meet other racers with more experience. I'm 16, I don't even have a license yet, but I finally got into my first street race this past Sunday. I have a little Dodge Neon, I know it's not much but at least i have a car. It's not fixed up or anything but I'm still proud of it. I was driving it on the highway to do errands for my dad, when this supposedly fixed up Honda Civic came up next to me and he wanted to race because I looked like an easy prey. So, I give him the signal to race and we both hit it. Me and him were nose to nose on the highway swirving past cars doing 80. Then we picked up, and then did 100. I was realizing that I was passing him through traffic, and I was surprised how natural it felt racing past cars. I was doing about 110, when he let off and I kept going for 5 more seconds. I slowed down and honked at him and waved. I was proud of racing for the first time. Maybe I can race a few more times this weekend or something

That's great that you're proud of your race and winning and all that. But you should probably get a license first. Also, you should definitely stop speeding like that in traffic; especially in a Neon. An inexperienced driver maxing out a non-modified car may seem cool at the time, but it's not exactly a wise habit to get into.

..your neon can hit 110? my sisters neon could hit 110 if you went down hill on ice and had someone pushing it...lol....street racing without a license...yup..i see you getting your license at 21

I'm going to get my license in two more weeks. My Neon is slow but i'm thinking of getting a cobra next year. It's just i turned 16 last week. My father used to race in his 69 Chevelle SS, 81 Camaro Berlinetta, 88 Iroc, and his 94 Mustang GT. All of his cars he fixed up and made them pass 140, with an exception of the Mustang which topped out at 135. He showed me how to drive badass since i was 5 years old doing donuts, reverse 180's, regular 180's, 160's, sliding, and a little bit of drifting. He also increased my reverse driving skills last year by putting me in a small alley. My Neon is slow cuz its governed down and its a 4 banger. Im getting a V-8 next year. Anyone wants to give me advice on racing?

sounds like you have all the advise that you would need at your finger tips. ur dad can help you familiarize yourself with the car, and basically just dont go out thinking you know everything in the world when u start up. otherwise i dont thnk many of us or your dad would be happy about the big wings and coffee cans....

Yeah.. here's some advice.. if you're planning on taking a Cobra to 140 through traffic just shoot yourself now.. it's faster and doesn't kill anyone else.

drive careful, its not only cars that can be re-called by their makers. You can replace cars, but you can't replace someones life, just keep that in mind and be smart out there

Probably wasn't your best move. If I can give you one tip on racing that you would hold true to would be to never race while endangering others. It's your choice to take the risk and that risk shouldn't be placed upon others who are just out driving.

You're such an attention whore, redneck. Wait your turn.:nono::lol:

To the poster, can I give you some life advice. One day you'll wake up and realise that 16 year olds do the dumbest shit. You'll realise that "being cool" dies with High School or you end up "keeping it real" flipping burgers.

Hopefully, you'll live to that age.

Do people never see the connection between rich/successful people always telling stories about how they were beaten up or shunned in high school for not being "cool"?

I know that I can't be going fast. I didn't want to race but temptation got the best of me. Before I race again, I'll get my license, and practice my skills for a year secretly from my dad. I'm going to be mature about it and not look for a race every weekend like other punks do. I'm not going to race for a while. THNX for the advice guys. If my dad found out, I'd get my ass kicked. Thgnx for the advice though.

You calling me a punk because i look for a race every weekend or soo?...i think a punk is someone who trys to race everything he see's in hes rusted 88 civic si and swerves in and out of traffic going way over the limits dangering others lifes... this being said i would like to take a min to say good by to a coach from my school that has recently pasted away due to "punks" in neons racing heres the story simpathy goes out to the family. *hope everyone learns a lesson if your going to street race...make sure your only putting your life on the line not others.

The driver of the Neon was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, failing to maintain a single lane, not having a driver license, not having insurance, having defective tires and not having registration, Eichkorn said.

Who the hell would try racing a Neon in this condition? I bet due to the "defective tires" the car hit the truck and they're may not have even been another car racing. Or the kid was just "reckless" and fucked up. Either way, it's a sad situation.

The mature thing to do would actually be to tell him, and let him kick your ass. You're going to practice your 'skills'? Here's an idea.. LEARN HOW TO DRIVE LIKE A NORMAL PERSON. Chances are the first time you test out your 'skillz' in a powerful RWD car you're gonna spin it out and kill either the car or yourself or both. I will have zero sympathy.

^^ Very true. I had some close calls when I was 16 with my rwd car and it was only a dodge ram. You get into a Mustang Cobra your going to want to plan your burial as well. NOT SMART Were not trying to bash you. We just don't want to have you get behind the wheel of a 13 second car and have you kill yourself and possibly someone else. I've known people who have done such similar things and they are not hear to tell about it. An example is one of my friends had a 300zx TT and he's not hear anymore....he lost control on a curve at the age of 17 and it just so happend that was the day he turned 17. I could go on about others but take the advice. Learn to drive first before you start racing. You'll have plenty of time to race once you've had some experience under your belt. Or go to a beginners race class on a track with a professional guide.

Its not about what your car tops out at...its about going from one point to another faster than the other guy.

Hell...my Sunfire tops out at 107, but if I get there before the other guy, I would consider that a win...wouldn't you?

ditto. Most races have nothing to do with top speed. Usually it's from one point to another whoevere gets there first, or whenever someone pulls ahead and its obvious the other car can't catch up.

Wether you think your the best driverin traffic or not is irrelevant btw. It doesn't take much for a soccer mom towing 5 kids in her minivan to pull out in front of you as your bombing down the freeway. Seriously if your going to race do it on a clear road where you won't have to be passing innocent people.

Another word to the wise is not to race with other people in the car. I'm pretty bad with this one, but if your going to be going really fast, or your racing in a dangerous place then don't race. The last thing you want to do is kill your friend.

I know however it won't matter what we say unless your the type of person that, will be responsible. So if your going to take the advice then happy driving, if your just going to drive wreckless anyways then good luck.

P.S. If your parents are stupid enough to let you get a mustang cobra then you should be sent to a foster home. :2cents:

^^ Yeah, any 13 second car is not for a 16 or even 17 year old. If I were you I'd get a so so car your fisrt two years of driving because during those ages you tend to kick the shit out of your car.

My dad cares for me and i do drive like a normal person. It was just that one time. Im not doing it again. If i do race it will be in professional races where everyone goes. alright so get off my case.

damn you guys are being dicks to this kid. so he messed up, let it go! and as far as saying a 16 year old cant handle a 13 second car, well thats just a matter of who that 16 year old is i guess. i have an '81 camaro 385 stroker, 770 holley street avenger carb, edelbrock performer RPM intake, full flowmaster exhaust, headers. making roughly 425hp, and 475 ft/lbs of torque, it is a 12-13 second car. ive been driving it for 2 years now. but i guess thats seen how in south dakota you can begin driving at 14. btw, i have done most if not all the work on the car (aside from my dad). it started out with a stock 350, then we went with a 350 hp 355ci. now i have the 385, so i guess you should learn to drive less powerful cars, then work your way up.

I really think it is mostly a matter of maturity... True, a younger driver might not be as good of a defensive driver as somebody more experienced, but when it comes to be able to safely handle a fast car, it's not as much as a matter of compitence, as it is maturity. You don't have to have a fast car to be a complete idiot and endanger the lives of other motorists. If somebody wants to speed, they're going to speed...

Vtec95Civic
04-11-2006, 07:34 PM
Yeah, but speeding in a 16 sec, FWD car means pissing people off.. speeding in a 13 sec, RWD car means sliding into people, in the most basic sense.

Don't take the things these guys are saying the wrong way they (and I) have seen and experienced what young street draggers are like especially those who race on the highway or in traffic. 16yr olds and highway racing DO NOT MIX! You will wreck, you will destroy your car, you'll probably get hurt, and God forbid you'll hurt someone else. I really don't mean to come off as a prick but slow down turbo you've got the rest of your life to go fast develop some skill and understanding of your machine before you attempt a stunt like that, maxing out an unmodified Neon is bad enough but in traffic it is a recipe for disaster. Most people don't understand how frail the human body is until they see it mangled in the steel cocoon that was their car before they tagged a wall going 120. I've seen too many people get hurt over guys thinking they need to prove something to the riced out Honda in the next lane. But one thing I can assure you the first time you roll something and land upside down and the only that saved your life was a chunk of cheap steel you'll think twice about risking your life and those around you on by racing in traffic.

good god I really pray you don't have to destroy an actual cobra before you realize how much more you need to grow up. 140 is cool and all but for some reason I just highly doubt those cars are doing 140 down the 1/4 so whats the point in having it when you are probably only ever going to hit it once while driving down the highway? My advice on racing? Don't get into drifting and add to the devastation of that sport. Stick to something belonging to neons and civics, keep on streetracing.

I drive what is most likely a high 12 second car daily and I'm 17 but there is this one thing I don't do that makes me better in this situation. I DON'T GO SPEEDING AROUND trying to start pointless races like these. Now I know if there was that one car that was really pissing you off and matched up nicely against you, most of you wouldn't even hesitate and nor would I but its the fact that he doesn't even have his license AND he's wasting it on a race between a honda and a neon... Give your license up in a much more worthwhile way man

ummmm, owning a civic, i have soooo many ricers and muscle junkies revving and ready to race me. fuck them. its that fucken easy. if you think that pride involves getting on the 10 oclock news cuz your racing caused a minivan with a family of 5 to swerve and hit a tree, then i hope you're shot right in the baby-maker before that event takes place. if you really want to race, organize a street race where there isn't traffic, u tard.
