90 'LTD,175K on auto & started leaking badly out of front,I'm disabl'd now & cannot do my mech's.,a good! friend pulled the tranny,replaced frt & rear seals. Still leaks 1 drop about 2-4 seconds apart when running? The XJ was parked for about 2yrs or so before I got it,my friends report was,frt. seal looked liked it failed,no sighs of burrs or cracks at torque conv't. I know its got to come out again,what do I look for? I need help buddies! cain't buy many tranny's with disability checks. THANKS ALOT IN ADVANCE!!! CARL

My first thought would be to try to have someone take a look while it is running, to further locate the source of the leak. Of course, double checking the installation of the new front seal is a good idea...a small ding on the side of the seal can allow a leak.

We will be checking it out when we drop it,maybe today,for anything out of the norm.,will give details then,THANKS!

Other than the seal where the torque converter slips onto the shaft of the front pump there is an O-ring on the outside that go's around the front pump and a gasket behind it --the outside of the pump where it mates with the tranny case which is what the converter spins. Usually its the O-ring or gasket that leaks not the seal, but when we reseal a tranny that comes out all exterior seals are changed and the front pump removed to change the O-ring, the front bushing ( which if worn will let to much oil hit even a good seal-U should be able to tell by looking at the converter hub or the bushing itself when the seal is removed) and the seal. You should lube the outer pump O ring and converter hub with tranny fluid when replacing being very careful to go in straight. You can make guide pins or dowels by taking the size of the bolt cutting off some heads on longer 1s you have gotten screw them in not to tight , then place the gasket down on the case making sure it lines up perfectly (some gaskets can be turned around and u might have some holes that should'nt be covered up)place the pump on the dowels and gently seat it in. This way you shoul'nt flip the seal or nick it. Make sure there are no casing burrs so use some emory around the outside lip of the case and polish the converter hub lightly with same . If and U should change the front bushing , make sure when u drop the converter in its not 2 tight and spins easily. Check all your seals for defects such as the O-ring having flat spots or nicks, gasket or seal tears. Sounds like Fun don't it. If U take the tranny out and just give it to a reputable tranny shop with the converter they SHOULD reseal all these things for a reasonable price. --Hope this helps U-Chris

OOPS- to change the front bushing in the pump--the pump must be taken apart where you'll see the sun gears. It MUST be put back together correctly and super straight. We used big hose clamps to go around the outside of the pump and guide pinns. Keeps gettin better don't it. If U can't handle the job let someone who KNOWS about these things do it otherwise you'll have a huge mess on your hands. Takin it to a shop after U have it out will save U some big $$$$ since most of the labor is the R and R of the unit itself.

I hope Chris reads this!, he was right on all counts. I took it to a tranny-man who is a jeeper,yes!!!,& as he was pulling it apart he said & showed me what Chris was talking about. unless you have the right tools,talent,& very good manuals,which I don't think they make anymore, I would let the pros handle it,because the chances of making a expensive ah!S--t are in favor of the tranny. Chris helped me,I just hope maybe this helps someone! Oh, the front bushing, seal area on conv't,& pump housing were all bad. :grinno:
