How does it feel to be toasted by a sleeper?

Well I know a few people today that know how it feels. I was down in the Orem and Provo area today and I ran into a few rev happy people. ABOUT TIME!!! I have been looking for people to race but nobody revs at me anymore, well not today.

Race 1:

I am in the middle lane and catch a yellow light. A Honda Accord pulls up in the right lane. From the sounds of it he has an exhaust, there is a descent wing on the back, and the car has been lowered by cutting the springs, and he has some nice rims. Then in the left lane pulls another LeBaron. It wasn't anything special; it was your run of the mill LeBaron with a 2.2L I4. Anyhow; the guy in the Accord throws a rev and starts inching up, I think alright, I'm game. As I rev the other LeBaron starts inching up. I am thinking, ok, whatever pal. The other light turns yellow and I let off the brakes and bring it up to about 5000 RPM. Our light turns green and we are off. I let out my clutch a little to fast and lost a little traction, no matter, I was blowing the doors off this Accord. Too bad, another all show no go car, I beat him by a good 6-7 car lengths. What surprised me was this LeBaron. He couldn't even dream of keeping up with me, but he sure was beating the Accord, by about a car length. That LeBaron was all stock from the sounds and the looks of it, and it has to N/A. I bet that pissed the guy off, he got his doors blown off by one LeBaron and was still beaten by another. And my intercooler isn't even working, HA.

Race 2:

This is where it got interesting. At another light, this time I am on a two lane road. Up next to me pulls some girl in an RSX. I like the RSX, it can actually move pretty good. This time I throw the rev, and she looks over and nods. I still think I am going to beat her. Light turns green, and this time I get good traction. She stayed even with me through first then I shifted to second and she stayed with me until the turbo spooled and then I started pulling on her, into third I am about a car ahead, and by the time I'm in fourth I am about 3-4 cars ahead of her. Damn good run for that car.

Race 3:

This was my last race as I was on my home. I am sitting at a light where most everyone needs to be in the right lane to make a turn up ahead. Well it just so happens I am in the right lane. Up next to me pulls a VW Jetta. Now I know this guy, and he lives close to me so I know that he needs in this lane. He is a little punk that has been bragging up and down about his car saying it's fast. As far as I know all he has for mods are I/H/E. He also has some PZeros on his car with some nice rims, as if his car needs PZeros. Anyhow; he starts inching up and there is no way I am letting him get in front of me, I'm putting him in his place. The light turns green and he got a shitty start, he almost bogged the engine. So I slowed down to let him catch up, as he come screaming up I floor it and pace him no problem. The only problem is that I am passing him and rather quickly. I even let him right next to me before I gunned it, and he didn't even get past the front of my car. I beat him pretty good, by about 5 cars, and I served him up a slice of humble pie. All he could do in return was give me the bird. Well screw you too buddy.

Heh, good kills Polygon, good that your getting to race people, I still can't find anyone to race...

Thats cool that the girl actually knew how to race, all the girls with cool/fast cars I know get them as automatics :bloated:

Last real race I found were two guys in and old ass Jeep Wrangler... had a beefy v8 and kept up with me till we hit about 90-95... damn their low end torque, I have nuthin till the turbo comes on :P

Everyone else I find is just rice, and not even a challenge... I would rather have my ass worked by a bad ass car than just race the ricey pieces of shit that cruise around my town :P

My best run so far is 14.6 @ 98 MPH. The car is capable of low 14s to mid 14s. I just need to learn to drive it better.

14's? i always thought your car was faster then that polygon. your always burning people. hmmmmm well it would blow the doors off my 240 lolz. i think i'm the high 16's. i'm goin to do some basic mods. i always got a short throw to reduce my shift time and i got a stage one clutch. by cat is realy clogged up now so i'm goin to replace it with random technologys' cat. and a aem intake. since my car has a relatively large engine ( for 4 cylinder wise) i think it would take that mods pretty well and it would probrably put me in the 15 second time slips. which is still nothing to brag about lolz. but i'm not goin to throw too much into the KA. i'm saving up for my SR. then 14 second time slips easy and 13's and 12's are well within grasp.

Damn, thats quick for being just about stock... I think stock 280zxt's run 15 something... *shrugs* I still gotta take it to a track... One of these days I will :)

Anyone know a good track in southern cali? Somewhere that doesn't close too early...

Yeah, but my car is pretty much stock. Most people think I am full of crap when I tell them 14s. I guess the reason I kill so many cars around here is that they all suck. I'm so mad, honestly, I would love to have someone give me a good run for my money or beat me. I love close races. It is hard to judge your car when all you really race is crap I suppose. I am also aiming for the 12s or 11s as well when I get the money to do the mods.

Nope, it's not unsafe, it is just that I am pumping 14 pounds of hot air, so I am getting a huge power loss.

And TV, I'll take ya' on sometime. And I would say low 14s is very respectable for a stock 4 banger that weights about 2800 pounds. I'll have her running low 12s soon enough. :D

Oh, I just thought you might be getting detonation since the air is hotter w/o and intercooler...

How did your intercooler break anyways? Just get all beat up and air wont flow through it or what?

Well, I'm not quite sure. I don't think I have been getting detonation, though it is possible, I should use some octane boost just to be sure. As for the intercooler, it isn't cooling the air. I am not sure what is wrong but there is a story in the Dodge nonspecific sub-forum about what happened with a repair shop and I am 100% sure that they screwed it up.

If I remember right, LeBarons have a duct on the hood that scoops air over the intercooler. Maybe the shop took it off and re-mounted it at an incorrect angle, so the air isn't blowing on it to cool it off? Possibly it is not operating at peak efficiency...

Polygon

Nope, I don't have a duct on my hood. My intercooler is mounted on the radiator. I don't know what they did to it, but I am going to have it checked out. Granted they could have screwed something else up, but my car does not pull even close to as hard as it used to.

Heres to the big ass sleepers! :D

T-bird isnt quite as big as a Bonbon, but still, people expect Mr Magoo to be at the wheels, then when it smokes them, hell yah :bandit: Thats the shit

14 for a stock 4, hell yah thats respectable, and get that intercooler fixed -fast- because you will have detanation especally with such high boost. You might simply split a piston head, rip it apart etc. Question though, before the shop, did you have your timing retarded?

I know the look on peoples faces when they run up on my Accord or Z. I still run the stock wjeels on the Accord and it's only lowered about 1.2 inches so it looks stock with just a cat-back. The Z is debadged with a single-out exhaust so it is constantly mistaken for a six cylinder.

The LeBaron is the a perfect sleeper, weighing in at 2800 pounds is perfect weight for a good set-up. The LeBaron is RWD right? I would try and find a good supercharger instead of a turbo when it comes time to upgrade. The lowend power I think would really help get you better times. I suggest a supercharger over a turbo because from a 1989 135CID 4 cylinder that has 7.8:1 compression, you can't expect all too much. The spool time of a large turbo would kill ya anyway, since the supercharger is linear, you got power right off the start. A much more modest torque curve.

In order for you to get a noticeable gain in power, and without killing the engine in under 25K miles, you will need to do alot of upgrades to many of the engines parts. cams, lifters, higher compression pistons, new rings, the whole deal. Then when you strap on a good supercharger to that block you could be looking upwards of 350hp. Which would make your car a 12 seconds car. :)

Nope, but the shop did retard the timing when they worked on it. I haven't been hearing detonation but now that you guys mention it, it is starting to bug me. I might take it in soon to have it looked at.

Well, the LeBarons from the 80s are FWD. As for the engine I am a 2.2L and my compression ratio is 8:1. I can run well over 20PSI on the stock internals; I might just have to start replacing components of the fuel delivery system. You can get a stock GTC running in the 12s with out much modifications. I am definetly sticking with the turbo, more power and better gas mileage plus I can reduce the turbo lag big time. Check out this little vid:

your LeBaron weighs 2800lbs?
My Nova weighs in around 2800-3000lbs...

Interesting...

You people ever race Muscle cars? I never got many Revs thrown at me before i took my car out of action, so i could restore her.

Hondas, Acuras and the such never really bothered me. I guess they figured an older car with a V8 of any size wasnt worth their time. Which worked out for me, seeing as at the time i couldnt afford the gas hahaha.

I cant wait for my car to be back in action... ahh the good ol days of hunting down the next kill. Not to say I never lost myself, when a car sits for 6+ years it usually doesnt run the best for a while. Regardless we rallied her for all she was worth!

Just ask Terminal Velocity... he knows... we've done it all in that car.

I try not to race Muscle cars, I have raced enough that I know I can't beat many :P

I had a guy in a older Ford Falcon pull up next to me while I was going 65, I floored it, at about the same time he did... he didn't just walk away he RAN away with his motor screaming the whole way... It was bad ass

Gotta love that good old american muscle...

Thanks, Ill tell the nice Lady known as Jezabell (shes a shameless little hussy)... that you think shes bad ass... lol she'll appreciate it. I dont know about you people, but my car is very tempermental about how you treat her, if you abuse her she'll leave you stranded.. or even worse NOT want to go when some punk on a Huffy throws a rev! Ugh... the humiliation! So I talk to her always in a calm matter... Unlike Terminal Velocity... His famous remarks to his Trans Am "WOOOOORRRKKKKKKK!!!!" hahahahah its one of those you had to be there moments.

The Nova's you like range from 1962-1967, in '68 they got the 'slopey' body style. I love them all.

As for pictures of my Nova... shes about as ugly as a train wreck right now. But compared to what she used to look like... shes a show car! What I mean is, she used to be 7 different colors. 5 shades of gray, Green and Black. Arent I cool? in my various colored car? Yes, the Ladies just flocked to it!... Stop laughing. Since then its been primered all ONE color, but the new 2" cowl Induction hood is black. No pichers yet... soon though.

You need to find a mechanic that you can take your car to whenever it has a problem... my Dad takes his Jeep to the same mechanic everytime something is wrong... I think its the best way since the mechanic kinda gets to know your car or whatever... *shrugs*

Also, if you take your car to the same guy a lot, they get to know you and help you out (give your car first priority and all that...)

Well my car is listed as 174 HP and 200 ft/lbs or torque, but I have reason to believe otherwise. I have come to the conclusion that Chrysler released those numbers for any car that had the 2.2L and the Garrett turbo. You could get the GTC in five engine options:

2.2L I4, Garrett T03 turbo, intercooled, 12-14 PSI, 5 speed manual.
174HP 200 ft/lbs of torque.

2.2L I4, Garrett T03 turbo, non-intercooled, 5-7 PSI, 3 speed auto.
174HP 200 ft/lbs of torque.

2.5L I4, Mitsu turbo, non-intercooled, 5-7 PSI, 5 speed manual.
150HP 210 ft/lbs or torque.

2.5L I4, Mitsu turbo, non-intercooled, 5-7 PSI, 3 speed auto.
150HP 210 ft/lbs or torque.

2.2L I4, non-turbo, non-intercooled, 5 speed manual or 3 speed auto.
120HP 135 ft/lbs of torque.

My car has the first engine option. How can it share the same numbers with the second one? There is no way IMO. Then I talked to a dealership tech that had an Omni GLH. He had the 2.5L engine, had put the Garrett T03 turbo, was running 13 PSI, added a smaller intercooler, and had a 3 speed auto. He showed me his dyno slip and it pissed me off. He was putting 205 HP and 225 ft/lbs of torque to the ground. Now I am running the better engine, a bigger intercooler, and a 5 speed manual. I have to be putting out at least the same. I figure I am doing 205HP and 225 ft/lbs of torque, I don't think the car would be capable of low 14s otherwise. One of these days I'll have it dynoed. Sorry for the long descriptive response but I have been massively flamed over this same question.

gto_merah

I'm surprised you're only running 14s!

My brother runs mid-to-low 13s: 1g Eclipse GSX, Evo III long block, blocked-off oil-cooler out, K&N, Dynomax cat-back, 2.5" Random Tech cat, ported-and-polished-but-otherwise-stock turbo, 3rd tranny (all replaced under warranty or recall!), hard intercooler piping (don't know what specs or brand), manual boost controller (don't know what specs or brand either). 4WD dyno-ed last September at 251hp to the wheels.

Even my big-ass boat runs a mid-to-high 14 and it's COMPLETELY STOCK! OK, so I removed the resonator bottle, but I promise that's all!

I'd say you could run at least a high 13 with some shift-point tuning! If not a mid 13!
