tell me this, i was thinking recently about the new 2006 eclipse, (263 hp), and why it's so slow, mid 14s? and it just got me! why is the evo 8 (276 hp) runs mid 13s when the new eclipse is only shy from about a 10 hp difference! i know that the new eclipse weighs roughly 3500 lbs but an evo 8 weighs about 3200-3300 lbs! correct?? Also, take in account that the evo will lose drivetrain HP! so why are the 06 eclipse so damn slow?!! and dont tell me becuz its FWD, i've seen srt4 running 13s from the factory, and it costs le$$ than the eclipse

it has to do with the power band. a turbo power band is totally different than a n/a. you can't compair directly like you are. the hp/tq at any rmp is going to be a lot better on the turbo.

Cant forget the AWD launch either. Also, correct me if I am wrong but V style engines are pushrod engines and those arent good into the higher RPMs.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the gearing ratios also.

gear rations, power to weight, power bands, all has a big influence

That is a very valid comparison in my opinion, and a very good question. As mentioned by others above, a good launch, gear ratios, and peak power bands make a big difference in what the car does at the track. The further the peak power band is pushed, the faster the car... search for Kevin's write-ups on horsepower and torque, there's some valuable info on there answering some of these questions (see FAQ sticky).

Maybe because they're two COMPLETELY different cars made for two COMPLETELY different reasons?? Just my .02

And I disagree with you Talon69, I think the new Eclipse is a really nice car, I would probably buy one if I was in the market for a new car.

Trust me two hundred pounds makes a difference.

I used to have this great graph comparing a 03 corvette C6 to a 03 Cobra SVT, now how this comes into place is this. Lets say roughly an 03 corvette weights 3300 lbs with 330whp and a 03 Cobra weighs 3500 lbs with 360whp, The corvette hands down is still faster than the cobra with it's higher horsepower. Now according to this site there is a formula for weight compensation and in the end the cobra would need an additional 50hp in order to be as fast as the corvette. So 410whp at 3500 lbs compared to 320 hp at 3300 lbs. Now this isn't corvettes and cobra's but the basis is the same. The Eclipse has to make MORE power than the evo to overcome the weight difference. It's not so much the power band as it is the weight.

And I bet on the dyno the evo and the eclipse put down similar dyno numbers, so you have thing the eclipse needs atleast 50+ more hp to be as fast as the evo.

I guess the rule of thumb is 100lbs=1/10th of a second on your quarter time

AWD makes the biggest difference. Put them on the highway, and the evo isn't pulling very hard

They are not worth what they are selling them for IMO $23,700 for the BASE GT MODEL!!! if im gonna spend that much, i might as well get the EVO!!!

But everyone has there own oppinion

I just did the car with options and it put the grand total to $30,000 and that was not all the options!!!!

So 30 grand eclipse or EVO? I would take the evo but thats just me

well the price is not the point, people might like the car cuz of its looks. its like saying i can buy an acura tsx for like 30k, but get the evo because its faster and the same price. some people might just like it for looks. my .02

This is why I think weight is the first primary advantage a car has, then displacement, then factory forced induction. Car manufacturers should really work on making cars lighter using aluminum chasis, etc. They focus all their efforts on improving fuel economy through new technologies but the same gains could be achieved through weight reduction. I think this is why V8's get a bad rap as "gas gusslers." They don't really consume any more fuel than a 4-cyl with comparable hp, they are just always put in heavy ass cars. That's just my theory.

blk_srt

more displacement=more air per cylinder=more fuel per cyhlinder. v8s have a bad rep because of people with double pumper carbs and such. They were an easy way to make power but not efficent

Im not sure what tires come stock on the eclipse but I know the EVO comes with some real sticky tires so im sure that has something to do with it as well as the suspension.

Mine came with crappy Eagle RS-A's. Good in all weather I guess but I hated them. Had too many blow outs.
