Hello:
My left turnsignal switch wont shut off when I make a left turn. Anyone ever had one of these out to replace. Car has cruise and headlight switch on same lever and tilt wheel. Removed top cover on steering column but not bottom yet. Need to get tilt wheel lever out first and ignition cover? Also have burnt wire smell when I turn on headlights. Seems to be from same switch? Old cars used to be under steering wheel but this looks like it may come off without removing steering wheel. Help or advice would be appreciated.

I have a 93GT, but I think the removal is the same. The tilt lever should just unscrew. Remove the steering wheel cover. Mine is an early 93 so it did not have an airbag. If yours has an airbag do a search on removing it as you need to take some precautions. Get a steering wheel puller kit from NAPA and pull the steering wheel off. From that point it is 2 or 3 screws to remove the multi function turn signal lever/switch. A failed turn signal lever will often cause the contacts to burn. Mine actually began to smoke when it failed.

Wow I'm hoping mine is not the same. I do have an air bag. It looks like from what I can see the switch is mounted on the outside of the steering column. After I removed the top half of the steering column cover. There are what looks like spikes sticking out of the colar that turn with the wheel and I was hoping this is what works the switch and could be fixed/replaced without removing the steering wheel. I have removed the steering wheel to work on older vehicles and it had 2 arms on the switch which shut the signal off and 1 broke off. I have also seen contacts in them that got so hot it melted the plastic housing. Last time I loosened the center nut on the steering wheel, put my knees against the back and pushed it toward me while I hit the nut with a hammer and it came off. Don't have a puller for that. Not much call to remove a steering wheel. Thanks for the advice though and I'm hoping because of the air bag and the way it looks it is on the outside but I appreciate you responding. Hoping someone else has a 94 they took apart.

I did mine, its a 95, you don't have to pull the steering wheel to change the switch. Once you get the top and bottom covers off there are 3 screws holding the switch assembly in, 2 electrical connectors, and it comes right off. Replace the switch, turn the headlights back on and see if you keep getting the burn smell. It's probably crud built up in the switch, so changing the switch should take care of that. As for the turn signal not shutting off, its probably the switch worn out. Good luck.

OK Skibum now thats what I wanted to hear. Sounds like what I thought by looking at it. 95 & 94 GA's are both about the same. Not real sure but I think burning smell is only when fog lights are on but I moved the headlight switch back and forth also to try to clean the contacts and I don't smell it any more. I saw the screw in the top center between the wiper switch and this switch but didn't take off the bottom column cover piece yet. You are making my day. I will try to take it off and apart first chance I get and Thank-you for getting back with that answer. Really don't want to pull the steering wheel and air bag. Appreciate the help.
