o/d solenoid death

My A43D transmission's o/d solenoid just stopped working a while ago. I now have the time, and the replacement solenoid to fix the problem. However; I don't want to install the "new" ($50 from salvage yard) solenoid and have it die too. Does anyone know what could cause the o/d solenoid to just die?
