I was looking at my engine and noticed this black powderey stuff. The reason it's missing a little bit is because I rubbed my finger in it to get a smell.
It's coming out of the crack / seal. But, what part is that? ..and why after only 48k on the engine
Thanks!!

my one and only guess is that it's melted sealant, I can't thik of why it would be powderey though.

i answered this on another board but i'll do it here too.
its the sidepan gasket on the tranny. its very common, especially when auto trannies get hot. its a very small amount of seapage and its bound to happen over time. dont tighten the bolts any more. tightening tranny bolts makes leaks worse. either have the sidepan gasket replaced or live with it. i would live with it personally, its very very small and probably wont leak much more.
as for the black stuff. its road grime sticking to the tranny fluid

As for the white powder-I think most of the bolts on my Civic do that. I believe that the yellow coating on the bolts is TiN, which would make the white powder TiO, which is what white paint, white-wall tires, and toothpaste use as a major ingreedient.
