Failed Organic Chem mid-term, damn it.

Okay, so I really DIDN'T need to block the ortho- and para- positions when I was Acylating and tacking on the nitrate, since the group was a meta- director anyways. I STILL managed to synthesize the meta -ethylphenylnitrate in the end, so did it matter?

And then I didn't show how that double bond in the benzene abstract that proton to get that cation and form the napthalene (ring closure). Shit. Points docked off for every single question, good lord. Didn't leave anything blank at all, and I still failed the exam. What the HELL is going on? Got all the nomenclature and structures right though. But the mechanisms, damn it... and the road map was the worst. Screwed up allll the thallations too, though got some of the Grignard right.

Why o why o why. Better hit the books again...carbonyl synthesis coming up. :frown:

i hate that feeling, especially when you know you've struggled to pass, really put genuine effort into studying.

well, that shit sounds hard so don't feel so bad. how did you do compared to the rest of the class? any chance the teacher will curve the grades?

Well, I fell 6% below the average score; just no clue what went wrong. There are 2 mid-terms, then a single final given by the American Chemical Society; this was the first exam. No quizzes, no HW, no "nice stuff" to help you with your grade, lol.

The funny thing is, there is absoutely nothing I did not know how to do on the exam. Nothing was a surprise; in fact, I left thinking I could get a "B". Imagine my shock at getting my paper back. The prof actually called me in his office and told me off for over-thinking all the questions and trying to complicate all the easy stuff. Kinda like, preferring to take inner city roads to get from San Diego to L.A. instead of taking the freeway...I felt like such an ass.

Organic chem is a year's course that's supposed to the the weeder class for chemistry and biotech majors. Even though 60% of our class last semester were people who were retaking the class, I passed with a "B" on my first try. But this semester is so totally insane. Blah I shouldve done art or something, haha.

Eh.. i'll stick to hydrogen gas bombs in plastic bags..

shit I know how you feel, I am only in AP Bio and AP chem, but that AP test was fucking absurb, The tests flip-flopped on me, AP bio was on inorganic chem, AP chem was about nano's and how nanotechnology can help create stable enviroments on the microscope level for bacterium =\ WTF? lol, don't quit man, the weeder classes are just that. keep on truckin

So, UPDATE: Got a "B" in the latest exam, taken 2 days ago, helll yesssssss. I can't beleive it. I feel like I'm going out with the MILF of my dreams, just purchased a VR-4 Spyder, and won the lottery, all in the same breath. What exhileration to know that there are only 2.5 more weeks of this horror to last, and I just redeemed myself from the dephths of hell since the last exam. yesyesyesyesyesyes! Claisen-Schmidt condensation aint got NOTHIN' ON ME!!!!! haha. Another update that no one really cares about will be available soon :bananasmi
