Power steering pump(forgot spring)

I have a 2000 GMC sierra..I installed a power steering pump in it yesterday,its the one you have install new pump into your old case.....Anyway, AFTER I put it all back together I found the little spring that goes in it and Im wondering if I really NEED that spring in there....I might be able to get at it(where the spring goes)without removing the whole bracket that holds in onto the motor...Is this little spring nessasary?? Thanks!!
