difference in blocks

I am trying to figure out the difference in block tha came in this cars.
First what is the difference between a SL and VR-4 block?
What is the difference between a short and long block? this one because I'm stupid

I am asking this because I got two offers on a 95 SL and a 92 VR-4 block.
the SL block I can pick up locally (AZ) for $400 and the VR-4 block has to be shipped from Columbus,IN and will come out at around $300.
because I want convert my SL into a SL-T:naughty: and was wondering what do you guys think would be best as a platform for me to start with.

the reason I want to know is to decide with who do I go to, the 95 SL block or the 92 VR-4 Block

and also if you have any information on anyone with a single turbo set up please let me know.

I don't know much difference between the VR4 block and Sl. I think there are some different internals such as pistons. But if I were you I wouldn't go single turbo. It will be easier to do the TT conversion. As I understand it you have to get some custom parts such as the manifold (I believe). There are websites that give you a list of all the things you'll need for a TT conversion and instructions on how to do it.

i know that 3sxperformance has the list and instructions on doing the conversion but I just wanted to know if anyone had more info on it.

and I know about the difference in the internals and compression but I want to kow about the actual block. are they any major difference on them.

and because both of them are 2-bolt blocks right?

depending on what month the 92 was made in, the actual blocks could be exactly the same or they could be different. The blocks are different between a 2-bolt and a 4-bolt engine. The 2-bolts are in every N/A and in the 91-92.5 TT's (i think the month they switched over in 92 is june or july, but i'm not sure). The 92.5+ TT blocks are all 4-bolt blocks. Also, the TT block also has extra oil squirters in it, which may or may not be an advantage. People have stated it could be an advantage because it keeps the pistons cooler, but then they say that it may not be an advantage because it takes away oil pressure from the bearings. But as far as that goes, either one will be fine.

As far as the actual internals go, all 91-92.5 cars have a cast crankshaft. All 92.5+ cars (both N/A and TT) have a forged crankshaft. All years, all models, all have the same forged rods. All N/A cars have 10:1 cast pistons. All TT cars have 8:1 cast pistons. Personally, I prefer the lower compression ratio when dealing with turbos.

All the info you could ever want for a turbo conversion is here. The guys who go with a single, are usually people who can fabricate and weld their own custom manifolds, or find somebody to do it for them. As mentioned above.

actually, come to think of it, TTGTOonSteroids has come up with single turbo exhaust manifolds

If your looking for a kick ass TT conversion check this out. You made need to change some internals though. :

Woah. I know the kid thats selling them. He lives like 5 miles from me. His car used to have a POS TK supercharger on it. I know he ditched that but I wonder why he didnt go thru with the TT conversion.

And I have decide if this is good enough i will send it to JonVr4 (from 3SI) to get the ultimate short block package. explained here >>> http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=311438

wow...3 grand huh? well, if you got the $$$ to spend, sounds like it will be pretty badass. Though, for that much money you could get all the TT conv. parts and still have a grand or more to play with :2cents:

Actually.... I have a SOHC... it has 8.9:1 compression... and is non-interferance... I've though a/b the possibility of turboing it...

whoops, i was referring to all the DOHC motors. I'm not sure about what the SOHC internals are made of, but yes, they are an 8.9:1 CR. I would go for the RIPP supercharger over the turbo on an SOHC. You can't do a TT conversion because the exhaust manifolds won't bolt up to the SOHC heads, so you would have to work on a custom set up to turbo otherwise. Either that or do an engine swap.

yeah, I had looked at the RippMods super... there's a Meineke shop, where the guy could do work afterhours, for cheap... and he's good... so maybe something custom...
prolly on my next ride though...
he's got two turbo's hanging from the wall in Meineke... I'm very interested
