Change gearing in a FWD

Please excuse my ignorance as I know nothing about gearing. I am rather unhappy with the top end speed of my FWD car and I was wondering if there is a way to change the gearing as you would in a RWD.

yes but it's not something you can do at home, you need to buy the new gears for your transmission, you will most likely need to remove your transmission, or at the very least have a hoist to lift the car. you'll have to disassemble the tranny, then find and remove the old gears and then install the new ones. it'll probably require some specialised equipment as well.

You could at a bare minimum change out the final drive. For example, mine comes stock with a 4.06 but I swapped it out for a 3.82. Luckily, the 3.82 is readily available because the 4 cylinder Contour uses a different final drive than the V6.

If you still dont like it, you could buy a custom gearset, but I doubt you want to pay $4-5K for that.

ohh i see what you mean
change the final gear ratio!
never thought of it like that
SS96, you could increase the overall diameter of wheel and tyre. it will have a minor affect on top speed but will also stuff up your speedometer aswell as handling, braking, accellerating etc

Hmmmm.... thanks for the info. I wonder if Nissan makes a taller top gear for any of their cars. I have an 03 Maxima and I think it is their fastest front wheel drive car. Does anyone know if the gears from a RWD (i'm thinking 350z) fit in a FWD? I doubt it, but does anyone know for sure?
