91 1500 AC/Heater Floor To Face Problem

Hey Guys,
Someone help me out here. I was having problems with the AC/Heater controller sticking on the Hot side. It would take a long time to go to the Cold side. Shutting the truck off didn’t help. I removed the AC/Heater control panel today & opened it up. I cleaned the circuit boards with 98% Isopropyl Alcohol & blew them off with filtered air @ 30 PSI. I also cleaned the wiring harness inside the dash the same way. It now goes back & forth to Hot & Cold, as it should with the proper hot & cold air coming out the vents. I have read here that sometimes it’s the damper or damper actuator that causes this problem. I will check to make sure my damper is not sticking.
A week ago I found a 3” spring & a white plastic retainer type item lying in the floorboard on the driver side. This is the same time that the AC/Heater controller floor to face switch stopped allowing air to come thru the face vents. I can only get air thru the floor vents. The floor to face switch is doing its job. When on the floor mode, I can feel the air. When on face mode, I can not feel the air but I can hear the air get louder like it’s restricted & trying to get to the face vents. Can someone with some knowledge of this tell where the damper from floor to face is & how it works? I’ve got a feeling that the spring & plastic thing is part of my problem. I have a picture of these 2 parts, but I can't post them.

Thanks,
Willie

The mode actuator is located above the tranny hump on the drivers side. This actuator controls moving the mode door. The a/c controller tells the actuator to move when you change the mode.

Without seeing the parts they fell, it is hard to tell if the actuator broke or the mode door itself.

The actuator looks like http://www.rockauto.com/ref/ACDelco/Detail.html?15-72139.jpg

The mode door looks like http://www.rockauto.com/ref/ACDelco/Detail.html?15-5520.jpg

2000CAYukon,
Thanks for the reply. Under the dash, on the drivers side there is a metal hollow rectangle peice about 1/2" wide x about 2" long that moves when the face to floor switch is pressed. The metal rectangle peice is attached at the top by what looks like a plastic tie strap & hangs loose at the bottom.
Anyone know how I can post an attachment of the 2 parts that I found on the floor?

Try posting as an attachment http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_vb_attachment_exp lain

Otherwise, you need to be able to host the file somewhere and post the URl to the file.

2000CAYukon, I had just finished reading how to post an attachment when you replied back. There is no browse button when I start a new thread or reply & there is a box at the bottom left that says I can not post attachments. Can I sent you a email with the picture? I can email you thru the forum if you have this checked in your profile, you will then have my email address, you email me back with your address & then I send the picture. I can not send an attachment thru the forum email.

My email is in my profile so you should be able to send me an email that way and I will look at them and post back.

There was no direct email link in your profile that I could see. I have emailed you thru the forum. When I get your email back, I'll send the picture.

Thanks

Well I received you email with the picture and had to go out to the parking lot to look at my 90.

There are 2 arms near the actuator. One of the arms goes to the defrost door and the other goes to the mode door.

Both of these arms have a spring in the middle with one of the white pieces (from your photo) on both sides.

Most likely, one should still be intact and the other will need to be fixed. I believe that you may be able to reinstall the spring; although, I am not sure why it poped out in the first place. I tried to find the part on www.acdelco.com but could not find it.

If need be, I can take a picture of how mine looks and post it; however, I won't be home for many hours. If you decide to replace the arm it may be a dealer item only or junkyard.

Good luck and let me know if you need anything.

2000CAYukon, I get hot/Cold air from the defrost vent when the the switch is applied. That explains the 2 different arms you talked about. Give me the location where you see all this. I have looked briefly under the dash, but I haven't seen the 2 arms. I have alot of wires under the dash @ the hump on the driver side from the remote start & the CD player that plays thru the factory radio. If your able to take a picture of this, I should be able to see this area on mine. It's now dark & I'll be away for the weekend, so it will be Monday when I can get back on it. I will look again in the morning to see if I can see the spring on the defrost arm. If you can take a picture without going thru a bunch of trouble & email it (them), that will help me out. I will post back the results, whatever they are.

Thanks for your help,
Willie

Willie these are under the dash but above the tranny hump on the drivers side. Both of the arms attach near the actuator so if you can find that (I posted a picture of it previously), then you can find the arms.

I will post a picture over the weekend that might help.

2000CAYukon, link me to the picture you posted previously, if you can. You have so many posts that it would be hard for me to find in your profile.

Thanks,

This is a picture of the actuator from the Rock Auto website http://www.rockauto.com/ref/ACDelco/Detail.html?15-72139.jpg

There are 4 or 5 wires going to it. I will take a picture of my truck later when I can.

I misunderstood you on this. I thought you were talking about a picture you had taken.

Here is the spring & plastic part that I mentioned earlier in this thread. I finally figured out how to get the picture in here.

I was able to look at mine. Had to remove my ashtray to get to the area. My spring & clips had come off (see pictures) the control arms that controls the floor to face mode. What is not clear in the arm pictures is that the clips are installed in between 2 separate rectangle arm pieces. All the spring does is keep tension on the clips so they do not fall out. The problem I have now is, I only have one clip. I could not find the other one anywhere. I shook all the wires in the area. I blew the area out with compressed air. That one clip is nowhere to be found. I can only speculate as to where that other clip is. I was able to change the arm manually to select the face mode (for the A/C) & it stays there. I will try to locate another clip & get this fixed. It can be bubba fixed easily if I can't find another clip. 2000CAYukon could not find the part # on Delco's site. If anyone locates the # or knows where I can buy one, please post it here. I'll update this thread after I locate the part & get it fixed. Again I'd like to say thank you to 2000CAYukon. Those pictures are worth a 1000 words. You are the man on this fix.

Willie,
You might get lucky at a dealer or you could probably find the part in a junkyard.

Glad the pictures helped you out.
