ABS and Trac off lights on

Late this winter, my ABS and Trac off lights started coming on intermittently. Before they come on, it feels like the pedal is grinding, and I can hear a grinding noise. I took it to our mechanic and he said it didn't have any stored codes, and he took it out and drove it and nothing happened. As soon as I got it back, it started doing it again. It would seem to me that it's probably an ABS sensor, but I don't know. Anybody have any idea what it might be?

That had crossed my mind, but when that happened before on my car, I didn't get the grinding noise. The sound sounds like it is coming from the pedal itself, so i guess if I were to guess one of them, it would be the front left. The fact that once the Trac control and ABS disengage the car is fine made me think it might be a sensor.

Bob, as usual, is right on the money. Since it happened in Winter, there is a good chance that water got in to the hub bearing, then froze and took out the ABS sensor the next time you drove. The grinding you're hearing is most likely the bearing chewing itself up.

I can recommend getting AC Delco hub bearings from richtazz. He got me a good deal on mine and it's about a 2-3 hour job if you take your time. Have some extra 13mm and 15mm sockets available as I broke some getting mine off. Of course mine had never been changed in the nine years I've had it. I saved over $400 doing it myself.

If I can save someone some money vs a dealer and sell a part or two in the process, that's just gravy. Just for reference, I can sell the Delco hubs for $151.00ea +s/h. Avoid the cheap, chinese hubs, unless you want to do the job again. Don't touch it with an impact wrench, and torque the axle nut to spec.

Rich, I know you're doing it more as a service and I appreciate the help I got from you. I was well satisfied as the parts were shipped promptly. Second best price for the ACs was from dealer that gave me a discount but they were still about $225, so you beat his price by $75 each and I did both at the same time.
