get a chord chart
sign up for classes
don't try and learn songs you know and like, you'll just get dissappointed faster, and quit.
stick in tehre sv, start small, easy music. also, try some classes. at the least, it'll *require* you to come and learn, even if you don't feel like it anymore, afterall, you've paid for them, might as well go. that way, in the end, you come out better, and can start learning harder stuff on your own and sharpen your skill.

you think you have it hard, haha, I try hard to pick up the damn thing, but I have learned everything, and I only pick it up when I intend on writing some shit, or work on new tunings. It can take me 2-3 minutes to learn a song fully, sometimes I dont even need to pick the guitar up to learn it, I just look at the tab/listen to the midi while following the tab etc and I can play it. Complex shit is differant, but when I first started my motivation was learning ALL of Metallica's song, and solo's, when I got frustrated with Metallica I learned offspring, and pantera shit, and crap in between, I can recall learning:
Stairway to Heaven
Tears in heaven
hotel california (fuck caps lock)
all the songs on offsprings "smash"
heaps of pantera
bon jovi
green day
jimi hendrix
Variety is your friend.
My self challenge was conqure something I dont think I can, and I did it.

i'm learnin from this book from the editors of guitar player magazine called "how to play guitars, the basics and beyond chords, scales, tunes and tips. I can't take classes cos i wanna take autoshop in school next year and i also wanna take web design so i have to decide between those two classes or add one more class to my schedule even though i'll like the idea of not having a choice of being lazy or not. And davo i don't think i have it that bad, the guitar is just not a good instrument for somebody who gets impatient as quick as i do....or any other instrument and i got the guitar in the first place because i wanted a challenge so i decided to get an instrument and well.......my rooms too small for a drumset, saxophone's too expensive and guitar was my best option

Coulda gotten a bass, those are fun, little less tricky imo, but you can't have the same fun that u can with a guitar. i'm impatient as hell, but trust me, if you learn most of the basics really well, and playing becomes almost second nature to you, you'll really reap the rewards. Learn the pelatonic (sp?) scales, maybe the arpeggios, play around. good luck.

I may just be a freak, but my main motivation is pretty much the fact that a) I enjoy it and b) I want to go somewhere with it and make money. I haven't found any career particularly enjoyable, but I enjoy playing in a band and the business aspect of it all, so I just practice to get better and hopefully make a living off of it.
