automatic transmission shifter

i have a 92 blazer, 4x4 with an automatic transmission.
When i shift the truck into a gear (drive, park or reverse) there is a lot of play in the shifter. When i first got the truck there was already a little play then it just progressively got worse. The guy i bought it from said there was an aluminum piece that was worn out, he had it tightened up and i helped a lot. I can still get it into all the gears but in order to get it into park i have to really play with it, insted of doing this i just use the e-brake.

It isn't that hard to replace the bushings in the shift linkage, and then your problems are solved properly and safely.

Wont it, not even let go of the key untill its in park? i rember vegaly turn of my blazer in neutral and it wouln't give me my key untill i put it back in park

when lock cylinders are worn out like a 92's probably is it'll often let you take a key out whenever you want

the key will come out, you just have to jiggle it a bit. Before I tear into my truck I was just wondering if an aluminum piece with notches in it would be the problem. That is what the guy explained to me when I bought the truck. He had it tightened up and it worked fine after. He might have just said this so he woldn't have to replace the bushings?

Is he referring to the shift cable mount on the trans? It is held on by two of the trans pan bolts, maybe they worked loose? There is an aluminum piece with notches inside the trans, but I don't believe there is any way to "tighten" it, the fix would be to replace that, but it's not likely your problem.

So you all would agree that my best bet is replacing my shifter likage bushings? if so how would do this? I really have no idea where to start. Any help would be great!

i was reading another thread, the guy had the exact same problem as me, could not get it to go all the way into park. he said he took it to a shop, they adjusted something allowing it to go into park, he had some trouble getting it into first gear but that would be fine with me. What would have the shop have adjusted on it? how do i do this?
