My school faculty is absolute rubbish

Ok. For you guys who didnt know, I got to Blair Academy which is a co-ed preperatory boarding school in Northwestern New Jersey.

Earlier in the school year, I hosted a dance at my school. It's main focus was to be different from all of the other dances since they all used R&B and Hip-Hop and rap music, which I all personally despise. They all sucked, and many agreed with me because they kept playing the same goddamn music all the time. So my dance, featured Dance/Electronica or more specifcally progressive trance, some house, and some techno. In rough words, it was a school wide rave.

After that dance, I had so many people approach me and say that it's the best dance that they've ever been to at Blair Academy. It was an absolute success, I had mad ass powerful strobe lights (MegaStrobe 700 watts X2 for you theater techy guys) and several smoke machines. And according to everyone, including me who was DJing, had massive amounts of fun. I couldn't emphasize how much people liked it.

Now the thing that I was totally unaware of, was that my dance had brought up concern within the "monitors" or some faculty who address issues at our school. When I had just recently announced that i was going to do another one this Saturday, the Student Advisors here at the school all said that it had to be cancelled or there had to be a compromise in the theme of the dance. Their support for the argument was that it "promoted the use of ecstasy in college (for those moving onto college) within the community of the school."

This is why I think this is absolute bullshit. I simply think that they are almost nit-picking because their reason is so illogical. They also this year had brought up concern about the way people dance at the other dances they have here that feature R&B, Hip-Hop, and Rap. They brought up concern because the students were all dancing in a way to "simulate sex" on the dance floor, or with bumping and grinding...

Firstly, the music I play's genre is generically called "Dance" for a reason...

Secondly, I think their argument is totally illogical and their reason for their concern. What on Earth makes Rap/Hip-Hop/R&B any better when half the stuff they play at the dance influence violence and sex (two most common) and drugs as well?

One faculty member argued with me that "bumping and grinding doesn't hurt people while as ecstasy does..." and by the whole argument, I think they are taking it under total extremist terms...so I will to. Bumping and grinding CAN hurt a person, EMOTIONALLY because one partner might not agree with how the other partner dances and they forcefully continue, that can be pretty close to being rape or invasion of privacy...

If my dance (trance/house/techno) music influences the use of ecstasy, why don't they also tell us that we can't listen to The Beatles who do indeed promote the use of drugs in their songs (sometimes), or Bob Marley who you associate pot with all the time, or the Grateful Dead, or Jimi Hendrix or any of the music from the late 1960s to 1970s, in which all also influence the use of drugs...hello???????

My intentions are in no way negative either...It's just a dance for people to jump around have fun, a type of dance that you can't necessarily do while playing rap/hip-hop/R&B

Am I jsut missing something or is the faculty? They said I have to either cancel it or do half my music and do half the other music...but again, what in God's name makes the other music any better? In reality, at my dance, their concern about "simulating sex" was solved, because there was little to know close contact at my dance because everyone was just plain jumping around and faliling their arms in the air and having fun. And it jsut doesn't make sense to go from progressive trance/techno/house to rap/R&B/hip-hop...it would be like going to see a classical symphony to hear them do works of Mozart but the half-way, KISS comes on to play some death metal....

But I still don't know what I'm going to do. We have these weekly school meetings where people announce and talk about what's going on through the week and weekend...I was thinking of either announcing the cancellation of the dance and stating the reasons above very briefly then finding a way to insult the faculty's illogical reasoning or I might just take up the offer of doing the dance, then playing mostly Trance/techno/house and just one R&B/hip-hop/rap song just so I can say that I played it, or I might just not play it all and do all trance....or something like that...

Does anybody see what's wrong here? Please tell me if I'm missing something...I know their trying to ensure the good being of the students but they're taking it to an unusually high extreme....

I know whats wrong. You go to a boarding school.

No offense or anything, but ofcourse they're gonna be all anal about it. Typically boarding/private schools have stricter rules, so ofcourse they'll bitch about any and everything.

I see your point, if you play rap during a school dance, does that encourage kids to go kill people they don't like, sell drugs, and fuck bitches?

Maybe, maybe not, but most of the time the kids don't actually go out there and do it. Rap's lyrics are way more extreme than something you'll find in dance music, hell most of the time trance doesn't even have lyrics.

As long as the song itself isn't promoting anything illegal, no harm no foul. Plus, whats so bad about doing drug searches? Shit they do that at my school, drugs dogs, portable metal detectors. Just check everybody before they get into the dance, and if you see kids freaking out and shit from X, then do something about it.

Sorry to hear your problem though, its like taking away your freedom. But shit, its a boarding school, whaddya expect.

I know what you should do. Do what they ask then the second part play the most foul rap you can come accross and them blam the retards who made you change to different music half way through.

I was going to say this as an idea

also, propose they do drug searches...course...this could make people not want to go :dunno:

your in high school...your life sucks...sorry to say but deal with it. It is 4 years, and you get a diploma that helps you get jobs. Try something like military active duty, like in say...the Marine Corps....try 4 years and see which is worse.

My :2cents: is play a lil more than half techno, and the rest 50cent or somethin. Make it so EVERYONE can have fun. If you play some gettho shit that is horrable noone will have a good time. Why ruin it for everyone? Also if you do play that *yeah, I sugested it earlier, but Im thinkin about it more as I type* then they might not even let there be dances. Their rules arnt that bad, half and half. Life is full of comprimises....you get what you want still, so whats the problem?

Ecstasy's a wonderful drug.

Fuck your school. Write them a letter explaining it all and get it signed by the 700 or so people who went to your last party.

simple solution: give out flyer's that are anti-drugs, and for the grinding thing, have condoms available to buy. that way, you cover both bases. you're not promoting drugs, you're just playing music, and, tell them that sex is something pple will do with or without dancing, and i'm actually helping them by providing means of safe sex.

Where are you holding this party? If it's a school sponsored party, then they have you by the balls. If it's off school premises, they can't do shit about what type of music you play.

EDIT: Just re-read the beginning. Your screwed unless you can convince them otherwise.

:iamwithst That is exactly what I was thinking.

I was thinking about how waaayyyy back in middle school at one point there wasn't supposed to be any rock music played (just Stairway to Heaven as the last dance) when, your right, (c)rap can be a lot worse.

And I know where you go to shcool, it's about an hour north of where I live. My little bro has a friend who goes there (or at least went there, he may have left/flunked out/got kicked out). He was a real goofball named Steve. You would have remembered him if you meet him, I think he's a junior now. Whatever. I'm getting off topic.

hey welcome to the boarding school life. basicly they will have it their way whether you like it or not, from what i've seen, many people who run boarding schools are very close minded and if they get an idea in their head it's next to impossible for a student to convince them otherwise because "they're better than you" or at least that's what they think. just be thankful you can have dances, at my school (grenville christian college in brockville ontario canada, for those of you who might know it) we haven't had a dance since mid last year.

as for the black question, at my boarding school there are 4 black guys and 2 black girls, up from 2 and 2 last year. what's even worse is that the town where the school is has only lik 6% black people.

and my school just expelled a goofball named steve lol.

No. They just think that it will influence the use of it later down the road when people are at home or at college.

Well tell em to fucking harden up, people are going to be exposed to drugs and use them regardless of what they do. It's fucking college.

All you're doing is trying to give people a place where they can dance. Hell, talk to the police about doing a walk through so the faculty can be sure there'll be none of that going on.
