are there any guidelines to this? or just plug it in and it will reconfigure itself......

Usually they are plug and play however, some models require a case learn procedure be done. The older the model the less likely you are to need to complete this procedure. However, some models need to be connected to a scan tool to install a new PCM so you will need to consult a service manual to know for sure.
