Auto-Glym is a very fine polishing compound made to be used with a
polishing machine ! Check Auto Glym (http://www.autoglym.co.uk/frame2.html) web site for more info.
The paste you hear about is old style toothpaste (not gel or whitening type) and use a soft cloth like a diaper or sweat shirt, keep it damp
and change cloth position alot, cleaner and removed paint clog up the
cloth.
Don't say "scrape" and paint in the same sentence.
Painting is a job that requires a lot of practice !
Spray thin coats of paint,it's not"necessary" to sand the paint after 2 coats if it's to your liking leave it. Get the feeling of painting first, the
perfection will come in time.
Sandpaper needs to be the finest grits you can get,600 grit "wet or dry"
should be the coarsest sandpaper you use on a model, the higher the numbers the finer the grit, they go to 32000 grit.
I hope this helped!

Aside from hobby shops and internet, where else can 600+ grit sandpaper be found?

600?! That sounds too coarse to sand the paint. Use something like 1500 or 2000. Tamiya makes finishing paper set of 1200, 1500 and 2000, and should be able to order through any authorized Tamiya dealers.
You can find higher polishing cloth, such as 3200, 6000, or 12000 (not consistent with Tamiya's grading) at Detail Master.

Auto supply stores usually have it around the paints.
600 will cut the paint quickly, so go slow !
