Fuel filter connector damaged

I can remove the rear line/connector from the fuel filter on my 1991 explorer, but the front connector will not come apart. I have the proper tool, it worked find for one connector but not the other. Talking to a few people, they said the "quick connect" is damaged internally.
I was thinking about replacing the fuel line, it is only about 24" long but, the fuel line is not available unless I buy a set of them for $200.00. I was told that I could reach into the connector and pull out the little spring clips that are in there (those are available as a replacement part from Ford) and then replace them once I get the filter out. I just want to see if anyone has done that and if they had any suggestions.
Thanks in advance

We have replaced a lot of the locking clips on Fords. All you gotta do is get filter out of line. The clips are readily available at dealers.

way2old, so all I have to do is pull the clip out of the tube using a dental pick and some needle nose pliers? I cannot open the reatiner on the one side so the filter will still be in the connector. Will I stilll be able to pull the clips out of the fitting with the filter attached?
Sorry I just want to understand this before I tear this thing apart and immobolize my only vehicle.........
Thanks

The filter will have to be removed to get the clips out. We use a small hacksaw and cut old filter as close to line as possible then fish the clip out. It is time consuming.
