I have a 88 Hond Civic Hatch with a JDM b16a out of a 88-91 JDM integ SIR. I got flagged by some COP  ,this past weekend to go to a state smog ref :bloated:. Can Anyone tell me what to do to my motor so it will pass the state smog ref inspection and get certified.
Can JDM motors pass state smog ref inspections???

Does anyone know if any usdm honda or acura from 88-91 came with a b16a?????????? or what usdm honda or acura came with a OBD-1 b16a???

you're pretty much stuck...even if you're car passed smog...it wont pass the visual inspection since JDM engines are illegal in cali...ask around about a crooked shop or somthing that'll hook ya up...

the b16 came in the 99 Si but that won't help you pass the visual. i know there is someone at the yahoo: honda4thgeneration (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hondacivic4thgeneration/) message board that works at a smog place in CA. post this message up there. i won't say that he'll pass you...but i'm sure he can tell you exactly what they look for. it's been awhile since i've smogged a car down there :)

What city did you get pulled over in?

How can you tell the difference from a JDM B16A1 and a USDM B16A2? I'm thinking, you can pass the emissions part, on the visual, how do they know that you have a JDM engine when the B16A also came with the US Del Sol and Civic?

Is the state referee station the same as Test only smog station? The last 2 smog checks I've had to go Test Only - wtf, are they singleing out us 4th-geners?

The difference between a JDM and USDM is that the JDM is usually missing all smog components that are put on the cars to sell them here. Your best bet is to go in after driving your car hard so the cat is very very hot, then pray they dont open the hood. If they do say your old engine was a gross polluter and was swapped for a newer motor. Dont mention JDM unless they specifically ask.

Go and try to pass first before buying new parts, why buy a new cat if they are gonna hassle you about the engine? Go the first time with you cat as hot as u can get it, then come back here if they give you shit. Also put in new spark plugs before you go, they are cheap and help pass by burning up more fuel.

When I went to the Ref 2 weeks ago this is what they were looking for...Cat, O2 sensor (1 or 4 wires)depending on year of car if you're running obd or non obd. For visuals, they asked me to take my CAI out, even if it has Carb#. Pretty stupid because they said, since my engine is for an Acura (B18b) then my CAI should be made for Acura too...how the hell would it fit then...its like telling me to get a full exhaust for an Acura too...which wouldnt work right? But anyway, didnt want to argue, so I'm putting back my stock plastics this weekend temporarily until I can reschedule... Put high octane gas and some additive, run it at least 1/2 hour before going to the ref, pick a referree thats remotely far from civilization...they're really ignorant in a lot aspects...one example...ref asked me why my car was made in Canada and didn't want to continue with the test until I prove otherwise that it was a US car...I just told him to check the Vin and call a local dealer...he did and didnt say a word about it after that...:D

im glad they dont check anything like that around here. they basically just tell you to turn your lights on, honk your horn, and make sure the car dont smoke TOO bad. haha it sure is nice not living in cali :flipa:

Personally I'd rather live near the ocean in an area where the import scene is huge and the weather is nice year round. Anyone who's driven PCH will back me up on this...

It sure IS nice living in cali... :D

I've lived in Cali (Bay Area) for 20 years, then last year I visited my brother in San Diego and drove up through Malibu on the way back...Man, it's beautiful...San Francisco has a different kind of beauty but PCH, its hip...

1. BE 10-15 MIN EARLEY
2. BRING RECIPT FOR MOTOR
3. DONT SAY ITS JDM UNLESS ASKED
4. RUN CAR TILL CAT IS NUCLEAR HOT
5. CHANGE SPARK PLUGS
5. TAKE OFF VISIBLE BOLT ON'S
6. RUN HIGH OCTANE GAS
7. ADD GAS ADITIVE
8. ADD OCTANE BOOSTER
9. GO TO A REF IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE
10.PRAY

ANYONE ELSE GOT SOMETHING, PLEASE POST A REPLY OR
SEND ME AN E-MAIL!!

Import, thats a fine list, just go do it with that gameplan. And you might fail, but then you will know what you have to do to pass, dont stress and see what happens.

I dont know how they do it in cali but here they hook up a hose to ur exhaust and then run it on a dyno. My friend failed, then he changed spark plugs, oil, and got some stuff that guarantees u to pass. Its probably the same thing as that fuel additive/octane booster but just wanted to let u know.

Someone told me to change the oil like a day before you go in... think this helps?
