WIP Another Modena Stradale (almost MSM)

about 3 years ago, i bought the MSM creations transkit for the 360 modena. I finally take the kit out and try to fit it onto the tamiya kit and i find that the resin has shrunk!! there is almost a millimeter gap for the trunk and the side skirts were too short and had curled a bit. I guess im glad i didnt assemble it three years ago to find that it shrunk today. I decided to use the shrunken pieces as a reference to build my own parts with putty.

here i have the tamiya parts with tamiya epoxy putty before i carved them

here are more of the shrunken parts. i will still use the rims since they seem to be ok

this is after a couple hours of carving, filing and sanding

i also cut out some material from the exhaust openings to accomodate PE from Acu Stion
It came out better than i thought it would so far. hope you like it

Slowly getting things done with this model. here is the engine. i super glued some PE bolt heads where ever they were needed. the body will be painted italian red (tamiya). The seats i have from the original MSM Creation kit are inaccurate and i have broken down and ordered an updated transkit from them. I really didnt have anything remotely close enough to use as a base for scratchbuilding. I think im going to have to take my time working on the rest of the engine bay while i wait for the kit to come in the mail.:banghead:

some more progress. i was contemplating taking out the plastic in the rear of the car and replacing it with some sort of mesh like a couple of other talented modelers have. I wasnt sure how it would turn out if i tried and i knew it would suck if i messed things up. i said, "$crew it" and cut off the plastic. i got some brass wire mesh from the local craft store and used the plastic as a mold/template. Here are the results of a couple solid hours of tedium. hope you like it as much as i do. came out decent IMO.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/24950DSCN0825.jpg
I'm not sure if im going to add the wiring to the engine since frankly, i really dont know how its supposed to go. i have a hand full of reference pics but, i'd be guessing where they lead to. I am quite ignorant when it comes to that sort of accuracy. Im still learning.

Fantastic and simple job with the rear grill: convincing!
Be warn with the muffler: the CS have a shorter stuff, like the 430.
And about the wiring job.. a little surprise: the 360CS owner manual, so now you'll know the CS nut by nut

I started working on the seats. The SMS ones are close but not perfect. also there are some different options with the Stradale. I was looking for the red and grey two tone look so i had to convert the seats a bit. here are some progress picks.
As usual, i used epoxy putty to add a lip around the seats like there is in the real ones. there was no such lip on these seats. I also moved the seam on the bottom cushion towards the front and added more "padding" to that cushion. At this stage, its just roughly sanded and carved into shape. Any feedback is always welcome.

The stradale has a different shape to that part... like this.

I also started painting the seats
Here they are after red paint and all taped up for the german grey
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/24950DSCN0849.jpg
Here they are without the tape next to the dash. I still need to paint the black details but i'm waiting for the paint to fully dry

this is the best shine ive ever accomplished so im really happy with the results. i guess the biggest part of it was being patient. i waited a long time between coats.
1) I started with gray tamiya primer and sanded wherever necessary.
2) reprimed with gray to make sure all was even.
3) primed with tamiya white using several light coats
4) lightly sanded with 2000 grit paper to smooth out the primers making sure all was still white.
5) mist coated with tamiya italian red 3 times until color was even
6) laid a wet coat and let dry for a day.
7) sanded with 3600 grit
8) laid another wet coat and let dry for a day
9) sanded with 3600 grit
10) polished with normal tamiya polish and an old T shirt
Other Helpful Hints
I have an IONIC hair dryer that i use to dry parts that i wash. the secret there is that it gets rid of any static so you dont get those tiny dust particles and hairs that stick to your wet paint. I even used it when the model was dry just to get rid of the static. you can get them for less than 20 bucks on sale. well worth the investment for paint perfectionists.

more progress to show. i finally forced myself to add detail to the engine. this is the original muffler from the kit.

The stradale has a much shorter muffler so i had to modify it to be more accurate. i melted and bent some styrene rods to make the extra tubing needed for the modification. here is a pic of how it started out

I also had the motivation to add some wiring to the engine. too bad you wont be able to see most of this when the car is completely assembled.

I started to make some fuel rails out of styrene. i kinda like them but they seem a bit too big.

It's comming out really nice: be careful with the rear glass: the CS kink haven't warmer pattern: not an easy job at least sand and polish this part: I seen the Prini's 360CS and it turn out perfect.
Once a time the rear grill is stunning, the finest I seen around.

Looks awesome so far. Are you going to CF-decal the rear bonnet and some spots of the engine? Would make it superperfect!!

the answer is yes. i must admit that i am a novice when it comes to CF. i plan on putting CF on the center piece of the engine as it is in the real car. i also plan on putting strips of CF along the sides of the bonnet. i dont think i am going to CF the under carriage since at my skill level of applying CF, i think i would ruin the model. i need more practice
