HELP......#33 Spiderman M1 Paint Color

Here is my problem, but was looking for some input from some of you more experienced modlers.
1. I am ready to start my #33 Spiderman M1. I have been drilling my head about the color red that should be used. SMS says to use TES2939 (Racing Red) because it is a deadmatch for the decals on the windscreen and the wheels. However its not the red we see on TV or through pictures because it darkens just like the Ferraris or the MP4's, 5's etc......
Here is a pic on their instructions:
http://momentoffame.com/photopost/data/501/medium/000_0114.JPG
2. The other Spiderman M1's you see on the net have used TS-49. I could paint the the windscreen instead of the decal and the wheel decals are easily obtainable.
Here is a pic of one posted here a while ago:
http://momentoffame.com/photopost/data/501/medium/DSCN0684.jpg
Now the question, do I build as we see it with the human eye or do I follow the norm and build as we see it through the camera. This has been eating me up for the past day or so, any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx
Doug

I have the same decal sheets.
First, I must say I love SMS stuff. I have many and I'm always pleased. But this time, they got it all wrong for the color. You should use Tamiya TS-49 color, and not that king of orange of the decal. It's completely off and don't look like the real Bike.
I was one of the first to buy them and I complained about the color. They said it was dead on and that every single picture on the web was bad... euh what ? Everyone is wrong and you have the solution ? Common... This bike IS red and not Fluorescent Orange. Have you ever see Spiderman in Fluorescent Orange shirts ? Even in the bad 90's, he was probably the only one not to wear damn fluo color clots.
So My guess is SMS had it wrong and they want to sell the sheets anyway. I'm sure the picture might be a bit off, but not that much. Anyway, Spiderman is red since the first day, and not fluo orange. Even their instruction are red and not bright orange
Use TS-49 for the Red and TS-50 for the blue. Use the decal that come with the kit for the tires and windscreen (it match perfectly TS-49) and just don't mind about those bad orange color decal from SMS.
Btw, you should consider the Crazy Modeling Photo-Etched sets. I got it today and it's VERY impressive.

Thanx for your input, my better half has said the same thing. I already have Studio 27 photetch, but thanx for the suggestion. I complained to them to but I got the " we sat on the bike and that is the color of it", I called BS to but I never saw it in person so I am all busted up on it. I will do some more research and see what happens, but TS-49 sounds like the way to go.
Edit.....TS-49 it is.......
Thanx Guys

I am working on this bike and I used ts-49 and it looks very good in my opinion. I have the Renaissance decals and they say to use ts49, it even comes with a mask for the windshield.
If you are worrying about the colour, wait till you get to the painting and decal application. Which colour will you paint first and are you going to check the masking and decals line up?
I went white primer then red then decal then clear then mask off red and prime white then apply blue then remove mask then apply decal then trim decal then clear then remask and lightly recoat the blue then remove mask and clear everything.
Time consuming and stressful.

BTW guys, which M1 kit are you using with SMS decals? They state the Rossi one (kit# 98?) is a perfect fit, yet with a Fortuna (kit #100) version available, with obviously the correct bodywork for Marco and Checa, I'd prefer to use that one...
I'd also go for TS49 - no contest!

Ok here we go, first prime the parts with white Tamiya primer, the Tamiya pink. When you have let that dry a day or two, paint TS49 in light coats, 3 should just about do it. The ping gives a great TV fluro glow to paint and its just about spot on.

The pics I have show the Web decals overlap onto the some of the blue so Im doing just the opposite. Blue first, white primer, red then decal. Im waiting on my white primer to come in so I can get head first into this bad boy. Started doing some of the silver screen decals on the front wheel fender? took me 45 minutes, ouch..... LOL :)

The Tamiya paint is all wrong. The real bike used flourescent Red which is Racing Red by Testors or Marlboro Red from MCW.
I built the bike using the Testors and have started a second with the MCW. The paint is a match to the decal but the decal isn't opaque enough. Who cares, I painted the windscreen anyhow. When have you ever bought decals that required paint lining up with decals and they matched perfectly? Never.
I originally started using the Tamiya paint and used two different cans and the colors were radically different out of the 2 cans. Not to mention they are red, not flourescent. One body in the garbage. I don't care what you see in a camera or printed in a magazine, I go for accuracy. Would you paint a Ferrari F1-2001 green?

I just aquired the SMS decal set and the #46 Rossi kit to find out it does not have the proper seat on the rear for Marco due to his small frame. Does anyone make a piece to fix this or do I have to purchase the other M1 Kit to get it?
I am torn on the paint to, but I have to agree the color looks so bright in pics and pictures DO NOT do Flo colors justice... I may be going flo red on mine too...

Unless you were there when the tech mixed up the paint and layed down the last coat, you're _just guessing_ and guessing is not accurate.
NO one sees color the same way. No one who has seen the Ferrari F2001 will see the same shade. They'll see red, because, uhm....it's red. So green would be ridiculous (or a phantom car, i.e. red, white and green Italian flag car), but you will _NEVER_ get the correct shade of the F2001's red.
Barring the impossible, you're just throwing a dart at the paintboard, just like the rest of us...;-)>
...then of course there's scale effect to consider.
Bottom line is to paint it how you want and enjoy both the build AND the result!
hth,
Bill

Ok bill, let's get ridiculously over analytical and technical.
For clarification on your part, the bike was FLOURESCENT RED!
Sure you may see orange or vermillion, but the fact is, it was FLOURESCENT not plain old red.
Did I narrow your dart board for you?

Just alittle update on where I am at. I used TS-49 and TS-50 and everythng is painted up. Laid down the silver decals on the front fender, seat cowl and started on the fuel tank where disaster set in. Thank god my wife was home because I was going for my shotgun....(Not really) I emailed Matt @ SMS and told him that the tank decal had nasty folds all over it and they werent coming out. He sent me a new sheet (free) and gave me some tips. Koodos to Matt (great guy), so I am putting back on the table tonight and going for it. So if everyone could say a little prayer for me I would certainly appreciate it.
Now as far as the color scheme goes, its simple build what you want. If its a green bike then so be it. I was certainly torn between the flor red and TS-49 red, I elected to go with the later of the two and I am quite happy I did because TS-49 is a very nice shade of red.
Thanx guys
Doug

The fortuna is too transparent, but so are the Tamiya decals and they are meant to go over blue. As far as the tank decal, you'll get those "folds" no matter what decal set you use. There isn't anything you can do about it. Where the honeycomb comes together on the tank top and sides, they don't match up, but they don't match up on the real bike either. It's impossible.
The other tip I can give, the decals will overlap, turn and seem like they are ruined (web decals) but they are not. Move the ball of decal into the closest position and hold the edge with your finger, dip the entire part (exept the edge your holding) into a cup of water and move it back and forth, the decals will untangle, then roll the part out of the water to lay the web down smoothly. Then use your fine paint brush to move them into final position. You can work the decal for hours so be patient. It will not get ruined if you take a long time to get them into position.
Once they are in position, I hit them with a hair dryer to set them temporarily, then I put on the decal solution and hit them with a hair dryer again. If you skip the first hair dryer part, you will risk moving the decal once the decal set is applied, and if it's a strong solution, you will ruin the decal because it will be warped and distorted beyond saving.
Whichever decals you place first, honeycomb or web, there is overlap where they butt together. I did the web first, trimmed it, clearcoated it then did the honeycomb. When that overlapped the web, i trimmed it with an exacto, then used micro sol to remove the extra laying on the web. If you try using tape to lift it, most likely you will pull up the web even though it has clear ontop. The decal solution seemed to be perfect for lifting the excess without damaging anything. Then I finished up with the logo's and clearcoated the whole thing.
The key, don't panic, don't freak out, be patient.

A quick reminder when using Tamiya's synthetic lacquers and Micro-Sol...DON'T!. Micro-Set is an acetic acid (think vinegar) and will not react to the TS-49. Micro-Set contains an alcohol base, which WILL react with Tamiya's TS colors...basically wrinkling the finish.

Nice job! Is Racing Red the color they created to do the Petty STP cars? If so then you appear to be spot-on re: the flouro red AND gave most of the modelers on this forum an easy way to reproduce it without having to go to BSR or MCW!
Re: the "Transparent" decals, could you simply order a replacement set from the Tamiya Fortuna kit and double up? They are usually really cheap from Tamiya N.A.

Hey Dave, you might want to try looking at HLJ - I think Tabu design or Museum Collection do the Fortuna/Gauloise decals and cheap enough for you to double up. :) ......just got my M1 kit out - it's Museum Collection - 680yen.
Doh, scrub that idea - the Fortuna's have a black surround for the Spidey bike....:screwy: Just got my MSMcreation set through today - look real good. :)

I wouldn't double up using different companies decals, I don't think they will line up. If you look at Renaissance vs. SMS, the Renaissance are a straight decal that you have to cut up in position, where the SMS decals are more like the Tamiya, already separated for you. Even if 2 companies did the same approach, the size and actual art itself may be different making the double up not good. I understand why the white is not super opaque, it counts as another color to double hit the white while printing. With a set this involved running a second white is an extra expense that just may make the set too expensive. The only other approach would be to have double the decals on one sheet, but from the looks of the SMS set, they didn't have room to do that either. For the next one I do, I'll just get an extra set of logo's from SMS and double them up that way. You've still got the Tamiya decals not being opaque either so a second set of those are necessary for the lower part of the Faring.

I wasn't suggesting that - just using two sets of Tabu decals or similar to overcome the problem. Look as if it'll be two sets of whoever's decals you use or put up with the bleed through. :shakehead
