Timing belt change questions

I searched and couldn't seem to find the information. It all seemed to be for older cars.

I'm changing my timing belt myself. I've never done this before but their has to be a first for everything. I am going out to buy the parts this is what I plan on getting below, is their anything else i need? I just rolled 60k miles

Tension tool from dsmparts.com 68.95
7 bolt water pump Mentor: 101.72
Mitsu timing belt Mentor: 56.98
tensioner pulley Mentor: 21.95
idler pulley SBR (couldn't find on mentor's site): 35
Tensioner Adjuster: 54.09
Balance Shaft belt Mentor - 21.77
Balance Shaft Tensioner Mentor - 29.33
Gatorback P/S + A/C Belt - 18.99 autozone
Alternator Belt 17.99 Autozone.

I planned on using the following instructions http://vfaq.com/mods/timingbelt-2G.html

What is the following tool? The instructions don't mention it and do I need it? DSM Timing Belt Tensioner Pulley Socket http://www.dsmparts.com/customer/product.php?productid=605&cat=&page=1#tabs
Is that just this: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/cranktool.html

I don't have air tools of any kind (I have a air wratchet but not a big enough compressor) So Im on my own. I have a torque wrench that goes as low as 20 ftlbs I realize I'll need something to get the small torque settings like 2-5 ftlbs range

Right now I think im around 430 + shipping for everything. If you know of somewhere cheaper for something let me know.

Btw when I'm all done the tool is free for loan if you pay shipping and have a rep around here that I can trust I'd get it back

I'd check a dealer for the tbelt kit sbr wanted like $20 for a biss with the seal, it was $4 at the dealer. Here's a place i use all the time $56.98 for the belt alone. I don't think they sell it as a kit but I bet it's cheaper. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=213934

if you have the know how it would be cheaper to get a balance shaft removal kit than a belt and all that

good idea. I read up about it it doesnt' seem to have any adverse effects really other then a rougher idle. It wont effect emissions at all will it (that may be a stupid question but I don't know the answer)

I read what it takes and thats a bit more then im willing to endure right now. Thanks for the suggestion though. My problem is i finish class on friday at 3pm. I have to have the thing back together by a sunday night at 1am so i can get to work that morning. The balance shaft eliminator seems to add alot of work.. *tosses idea around in head*

Dude, hit eBay. When I was going to buy a timing belt like 2 weeks ago, there was the same kit that SBR had for like $75 or something.

EDIT: Sorry for the jack, but I have a question t belt related that you might benefit from. Is it really necessary to get all the new pulleys and shit or will just the belt(s) suffice?

do I need the tensioner pulley, tensioner and tensioner adjuster?

I thought I only needed the tensioner pulley, and tensioner. Now after seeing the mentor site im confused.

I'm not sure cause it seem like places alway call parts by different names. I would suggest doing all new timing components with the belt (when's the next time you plan on doing this again?) Thos pulley's can get worn and start to drag costing a coupld hp. There are two pulleys idler and tensioner, then there is a hydralic tensioner (possibly tensioner adjuster not sure though) and i have no isdea what the tensioner is unless thats the hydralic tensioner and the tensioner adjuster is the tool.

I updated my post above. I figured otu what it was on the mentor site. The only thing left that I couldnt' find that I have to get from sbr was the idler pully but that wasn't too bad. That site saved me a bunch of money actually like 80 some bucks total. I still ahve to get the tensioner tool which sucks but what else can you do. I don't know anyone that has one. The one you make kinda scared me since it could get stuck...

Thanks for all the help. My last question remaining is about the tool I posted above in my first post. anyone know what it is for?

Yeah personal i would not do it myself becuase there is a floating tension pulley on the car and it would mess your car very easly. Only one shop where i live will touch the timing belt. and i dont trust them at all. They test drive customers car and get pulled over doing 80 throw town and get off because they work on the cop cars.

those types of places give bad names to small local shops

that sucks. my problem is all the dealers around here want 1500 to do it adn thats just the belt, and a few pulleys not everything i want to have changed. I don't have that type of money i only had a small tax refund.

When I took off and put back on my timing belt, I just used a spanner wrench with a friend on the crank pulley. We never used any special tool, and to the the auto tensioner back in, use like one of those vice type things thats bolted to a work bench, i cant remember the name for it, but its used for holding stuff while you work on it, or use a c clamp

Replace everything. I have seen pulley bearings fail. If one locks up it will destroy the belt I'm sure, and we all know the consequences of that. No reason not to change them, they're cheap.

For a full replacement of the tbelt I dont use any special tools. I have a method of doing this that works very well for me, but I don't have the time right now to post it. I've been meaning to write something up on a related topic for the EVOm forums, maybe I'll hit this topic at the same time and put it on my site, since it's a popular job. And for good reason, it's expensive to have it done, and you can't trust ANYONE, not even the dealer.

1500 to just change the belt? Are you serious? I need to get my done in the next couple weeks and I havn't priced it yet.

Yeah it was super expensive because most dealers didn't have hte tools around here. Plus they said they had to pull the engine. Which I know you don't.

Thats why I opted to do it myself. Takes about a weekend I assume for someone who hasn't done one before but to save that much money and change out alot more it's definately worth it to me.

it takes 10 minutes with the engine out and around 3-5 hours to do with the engine in if your good

With the 6 bolt in the 2g, and the way my car was set up, it was far easier to pull the motor to do a tbelt job. Luckily I blew up the motors and trannys long before the tbelt expired :D

Edit> FYI, the EVO setup is 10 times better. It has an autotensioned serpentine accessory belt for starters... There is also plenty of room to get the tbelt cover off, unlike the 6bolt in a 2g. Etc. If I was really motivated I could probably do a tbelt in 1-1.5 hours. I like it.
