Hello,
I seem to be having a problem and maybe somebody can help me. I have a 1986 2M4 2.5L 5 speed Fiero. The car has been running fine. It only has 70000 miles on it and today I ran into a problem. I was driving the car and all was fine. I parked, shut the car off and went in the store and when I came out the car would not start at all. It just keeps cranking. I am getting fuel to the engine but it will not turn over. It doesnt even sound like its trying to turn over just keeps cranking and cranking. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be? I have an accel super ignition installed but its been working fine. I dont know if maybe it went bad but if it did would the engine still crank? Any info on the matter would be a great help. Thanks alot.
Mike

Ok problem solved. I changed the cap and rotor which Im sure needed change anyways because it was severely corroded. That didnt fix my problem, it still wouldnt start. Changed fuel filter because I thought maybe it was clogged but still wouldnt start. Then I took out the ignition coil and realized the wires were not very secure. I didnt test the car after rewiring the ignition coil and decided to take out the fuel injector and clean it up, I pinched all the vacuum lines with pliers because I thought maybe I had a clog in one. Then I put everything back together and tried to start it and it started right up. Im not sure which of the 3 things Ive done solved the problem but Im pretty sure it was cleaning the fuel injector although it might have been as simple as rewiring the positive and negative wires to my ignition coil but like iI said I didnt test it after rewiring it. I was told by alot of people it was my fuel pump but I was getting fuel. I was also told my timing jumped, I didnt want to believe that, so being that I didnt want to resort to paying a mechanic to fix or at least diagnose it I figured Id take matters into my own hands and I solved the problem myself. Hope this may help somebody.

Hello again I posted saying I had a starting problem and then thought I had fixed the problem but it has happened again. The problem seems to be intermittent. It will start fine and run great and then when I try to start it up maybe every 4th time it wont start just keeps cranking. I found out however that if I crank and put my pedal to the floor and hold it there that itll eventually start and everythings fine. Ive changed my plugs, cap and rotor and rewired my ignition thinking that would fix it. It was starting fine again then lately its been happening again. It doesnt happen all the time just intermittenly. I was thinking possibly my fuel pump but Ive been getting fuel and I hear it turn on. Does anybody happen to have any idea what the problem could be.

Do a pressure test on the fuel system. Just because you are getting fuel to the engine does not mean that there is enough fuel getting there. I had a 93 Jimmy, and fuel was getting to the engine, but it would not start, Spark and everything else was fine. I pressure tested the pump and found out that it wasn't getting enough pressure. Hence not enough fuel.
The other thing that comes to mind, (and it might even be in your owners manual if you have one, it was in my 84 Fiero's manual) is that it tells you to push and hold the gas pedal to the floor while cranking and this would clear out any excess fuel in the system.
Basically if it flooded.
If this is the case, it would seem to be that the injector isn't cutting off the fuel and flooding it. I've seen this on the old Chrysler "K" cars.
Anyway, hope this helps.

You can try running injector cleaner threw it but that sometimes wont help. pore a can in the tank and then fill the fuel filter with some. Put it back together and just keep it running with some gas in a cup or starting fluid.
If that doesn’t work take it of and put the injector in a can of cleaner.
If that doesn’t work send it out to be cleaned or buy a new injector.

Thanks for all the feedback everybody. Well she is still doing it but its been intermittent. When she doesnt start I find that if I floor the gas pedal it will start. It also seems to run much better on that initial start dropping about 300 RPMS lower than usual but then at a second restart she idles a little high again. Im going to try replacing the fuel injector next and see if it solve the problem. Thanks
