Hi all, i've got a newbie tranny questions,
-can you get any chevy tranny too bolt up to any chevy motor?

-i ask because i'm doing an engine swap on a datsun and can get my hands on a 60's 327 for next to nothing and don't know what tranny to use. it needs to be std. i was going to do a ls1/t56 swap but this deal came up.

Thanks

They are not all interchangeable. Even though the basic transmissions are the same, the bellhousings vary. There are two basic patters - One for 90° V-8 and V-6 engines, and one for 60° V-6 engines and most later I-4s. Oddly, some of the older 4s used the 90° pattern. Also, later V-8 transmissions (intended for LS1, etc.) are not compatible with the older V-8s in all cases.

Your 327 should accept any transmission designed for the SBC from 1965-1992, and some from before and after that range. Vortec V6 and V8 trucks (including Astro vans) and full sized cargo vans used that same pattern until 1998 and 2003, respectively. However, the clutches changed from purely mechanical linkage/fork to mostly hydraulic slave cylinder types around 1982 (again, depending upon model) so you'll need to be aware of that before you go shopping.
