Replacing O2 Sensors, difficulty? Price$?

My O2 Sensors need replacing and I was wondering what the difficulty for a relative novice on my Rodeo-repair. I know that O2 sensors run roughly $50/a piece, but what would be reasonable to pay for a mechanic to do the job for me if I am uncapable of performing the repair?

I live in an apartment complex, so I don't have adequate space or tools to do major jobs here. I do have access to a garage on a military base, but still I don't have the knowledge to perform complicated mainenance. I did just buy a repair manual for Rodeos and it does summarize repair jobs quite well.

What should I do? thanks everyone

What problems are you having that requires the replacement of all oxygen sensors? Assuming you have a 1996+ 3.2 w/ 4 sensors, the two downstream sensors should not need to be replaced. All they do is tell u if the catalytic converters are working or not. Basically a go/no-go gauge.

a little more background is needed. What year/engine? Any CEL codes?

If you do have to do it, it is too easy to pay someone to do. Buy the O2 sensor socket, it makes the job easier. I just changed out all of mine and it was simple.

The first diagnostic test I did said the Air Mass Flow Meter was bad so I changed that out. Then the CEL came back on and I checked it again and the code (I forget what it was exactly) was for the O2 Sensors. I was guessing since the Air Mass Flow Meter was bad for so long, it damaged the O2 sensors. Is that not what probably happened? And if its not the O2 sensors, what should I do?

Like I said I know jack squat, but willing to learn. i have limited resources. I did buy the latest repair manual, but was still trying to figure out what was the best option for repair. Myself or taking it to a shop?

Thanks again

I'd start by going to autozone & getting the OBD2 codes read again. Get the exact code(s) & post them here. For example, a lean/rich code doesnt mean a MAF or an O2 sensor is bad, it means you have to track down the problem that's causing the lean/rich condition. O2 sensors will be a bear on a 1997, but not impossible. If you can change a challenging spark plug, you can do an O2 sensor r/r. Yes your 1997 will have 4 O2 sensors. 2 before the cats, two after.

Yes your 1997 will have 4 O2 sensors. 2 before the cats, two after.Actually on the 5 speed there are 3 before that catalytic converter and only one after. There are Bank1 (passenger's side) Sensor1 and Bank2 (driver's side) Sensor1 (located between the exhaust manifolds and where the Y-pipe comes together) just as on an Automatic tranny. Then there's Bank1 Sensor2 (between the Y and the cat) and Bank1 Sensor3 (after the cat). Even though there are 3 sensors before the cat only two of them are fuel control sensors, B1S1 and B2S1. With the other two monitoring catalytic converter performance.
