I have a 1985 Pontiac 6000, and it won't crank. There's power going into the distibutor cap but not coming out.

Welcome to AF! Since you have a distributer remove the rotor button and the ignition module inside the distrubuter and replace it. Also the rotor is notorious for burning through and will not allow it to start either. Hope this helps.

IF GTP Dad's suggestion doesn't work, have your ignition module tested.

the best way to check for spark (if indeed that is your problem). take off your wires one by one (remember as you go), and stick a screwdriver inside and hold it very close to the motor w/o touching. have someone crank it over, and see the spark, if not take off the wire to the cap. if it comes out of the acp and not the wire. replace the wires. you can check for resistance in the wires by looking in your repair manual or ask one of the parts pro (hate to took my own horn but at advanced auto our haynes manuals are very helpful) if you have spark in your wires and the engine groans over without the sound of power check the battery (11-12.65 volts on voltmeter) or take your starter to get checked out
