Getting a P1406 code. Cleared the code with my reader, but it keeps coming back. I cleaned the EGR valve ports and replaced the EGR valve itself but it stills reads the 1406. Anyone have a suggestion? O2 sensor perhaps?

Welcome to the CEL club - sorta....

I've got the code of P0401 - EGR insufficient flow.

It comes on for a few days, it goes off for a few days - I give up, really.

I've replaced all 4 O2 sensors, (as 2 were setting off codes), cleaned the EGR valve twice, new air filter, pcv valve, etc.

Still need to clean the MAF sensor to see if that's part of the issue, but everytime the weekend comes, the wind starts howling. Refuse to open up the intake air system with the dust flowing in every direction.

P1406 is EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit, so if the EGR is the same as my 99, take it apart and clean it. Clean the pintle and move it in and out.

I took the throttle body off today and cleaned the port where the EGR feeds into the intake. That seems to have cleared the CEL and the code. Afterwards, I drove around for about 20 miles and the code has not returned. Evidently, the EGR flow is more sensitive than I gave it credit for, since there was minimal blockage.

I had considered replacing O2 sensors, but when checked with the scan tool software they seem to be switching just fine. I don't want to randomly replace them at $50 a pop unless they start throwing their own codes.

Hopefully this fix will be okay to get me through emissions inspection. If not, then I guess it's time to trade the old beast. She's definitely getting cranky in her old age.

A side note... I used some Sea Foam in the intake's vacuum port and it seems to have really helped clean things out. She runs much smoother now.

I highly recommend the Sea Foam. It works very well.

I'm about ready for anger management...

Drove the truck around for about 30 miles w/ no CEL. I'm thinkin' everything looks fine. I have my daughter take it to the shop for emissions inspection and the 1406 comes on as she's driving into the parking lot. That call from her was a real bummer.

I also got a code on the camshaft timing sensor this time. It's right on the front of the timing belt cover so it looks simple enough to replace. Never seen that one before so it's back to the forums for another search.

Anyone?
