its making some sort of knocking sound. I was wondering what kind of cars i can get a 3.8 out of and if it will bolt right in. I know i would need a new tranny if i wanted to drop in a 3.8

3.8's came in mid 95 and went through 2002

it sounds like its in the top end could it be a lifter or a valve or something. Does a 3.8 just bolt in the same motor mounts as a 2.8 and what other stuff would i need to change over

you would need fuel upgrade like fuel pump and wireing harness, and you might need suspention upgrade also. i don't know if it is a bolt in or not.

if you are pulling the motor, mide as well go all the way and get a v8

i would think there would be just as much involved in changing from a 2.8 to 3.8 as to a v8 except maybe suspension parts....but i'm not certain

:iagree:
For the mere simple fact that NO it's not just going to drop and bolt in. The 2.8L is a 60* motor, a 3.8 is 90* (essentialy a 305 5.0L minus 2 cylinders)

You'd probably get smoked by a 'stang on a good day with a 6 cylinder.. unless of course it was a 6 cylinder stang....

lol screw the v-6 and the 305 for that matter. drop in a brand new 350 from gm goodwrench (they make them new still in Mexico lol). It only costs $1350 from jegs and i dunno if they have free shipping or not. it makes 260 horses stock form and 350 lb/ft of torque, so you might want to upgrade whatever tranny you have now to either th350, th400 or 700r4 trannies. maybe it already has one of them but i dunno lol... if you are going to be replacing motors anyways, then you might as well put that 350 in there maybe better cam and heads as well so you can get a 400+ horse engine that runs on 91 octane or even 87 with the right fuel curve and comression ratio...
before you go ditching your current motor though, i would try the old screwdriver trick to try to locate to source of the knock
