Starting Problems

My 99 GMC Sierra every so often when you turn the key the engine turns over but does not start after waiting for awhile sometimes 5 minutes sometimes 20 it will start but will just keep turngin the engine over every time till it finally does start does anyone know why it is doing this?

MY truck did this until the fuel pump finally died completely while on a trip.
There are other things that can do it also. But the fuel pumps are famous for dying on you. A pressure gauge becomes an essential tool. I lost three pumps in two years, so the gauge lives in the tool box under the hood.
BTW I've been told to not run the tank under 1/4 as the gas helps cool the pump.

Same thing happens with my 98 Sierra. I had it towed to a shop and is started. Today it did not start after waiting ... the shop called, the banged the fuel pump and it started. Now I have to replace it. A new GMc pump is $600
