As I was browsing through the forum, something came to mind. I began to wonder how Chevy came up with the name of their Votec engines. With that
curiosity in mind I looked up vortec in the dictionary. The closest I found was vortex,
One entry found for vortex.
Main Entry: vor·tex
Pronunciation: 'vor-"teks
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural vor·ti·ces /'vor-t&-"sEz/; also vor·tex·es /'vor-"tek-s&z/
Etymology: New Latin vortic-, vortex, from Latin vertex, vortex whirlpool -- more at VERTEX
1 a : a mass of fluid (as a liquid) with a whirling or circular motion that tends to form a cavity or vacuum in the center of the circle and to draw toward this cavity or vacuum bodies subject to its action; especially : WHIRLPOOL, EDDY b : a region within a body of fluid in which the fluid elements have an angular velocity
2 : something that resembles a whirlpool <the hellish vortex of battle -- Time>
With this defenition in mind is Chevy implying that their Vortec engines are gas hogs? I do say that My 262, V6 gets pretty bad gas milage for a V6.
Anyone else have any comments on this?

Vortex refers to the design of the combustion chamber and its ability to "swirl" the air/fuel mixture for a more efficient burn process. The concept is nothing new in automotive engines; it’s been around for years. Honda Civic had Controlled Vortex Combustion Chamber (CVCC) in the 70's. Ford has their 2.3HSC (High Swirl Combustion) which debuted in 1983 in the Tempo and Topaz. Chrysler started with a Hemi back in the 60's, which refers to the hemispherical configuration of the combustion chamber. GM decided it was time to jump on the band wagon and calls theirs Vortec.
