Worked on my car today

Well, I just got done working on my Talon! Remember, I am getting ready to take the head off to get the gasket surfaces planed and valve job done. Got out all my tools and started pulling shit off. So I get all the little shit off and I was going to take off the exhaust manifold and turbo for some porting. I tried to unbolt the dp and then the turbo. No luck, they were stuck as hell. The impact and this 3 ft pipe now called the "torque stick" put over the wrench for some extra torque couldnt get them off. So I go to Wal Mart for some WD 40, but they were out so I got this PB Blaster stuff. That shit is bananas. A squirt of that and the torque stick worked wonders to get the rusty turbo and DP bolts. So I got the whole hotside of the head off tonight. Also, a head gasket kit is on the way here, it should be here by like Tuesday or Wednesday hopefully.
Ok, now for the questions that happened while I was doing this. First off, the manifold was barely bolted on (I wonder what that loud ass knocking was ). They were like finger tight. Also, some of the manifold studs came off with the manifold nuts. I'm thinking the stainless manifold nut kit from SBR is in my future, what do you guys think? Do the manifold nuts go on like head studs, hand tighten them and turque the bolts on?
So this turbo. I get to F around with the turbo bolt that broke off in it, thats why there was only 3 bolts. Also, correct me if I am wrong but dont all the 14b's have nongrouped fins? The turbo I pulled off has 6 groups of two fins. I will run a serial number check tomorrow.
I will do some porting whiles its out and I know where to find the info on porting, but what parts do you guys think I should port? I was planning on porting out the manifold and the 02 housing, but could I port anything in/on the turbo that would make a difference?
Thanks guys, the intake manifold is next in line. :D

port the manifold, the turbo exhaust housing, and the 02 sensor housing, that should be good enough the guy on plymouthlaser.com has a hell of a write up on porting your manifold and 14b. you need to pick up a bottle of anti sieze before you put that all together again or something of the sort

Take the studs out of the head and we always replace them with bolts with a 1.25 thread pitch from the hardware store and they work wonderful.
The fins should be ungrouped... Maybe you have a special model from the factory?
You can port out the O2 housing a ton, you can port out your exhaust manifold and you can port the exhaust side of your turbo. (The exhaust inlet part where the manifold bolts up to it.)
Have fun and go crazy with it.

Liking that bolt idea Blackcrow. I just checked on tuners, with TDO5 and grouped fins it should be a 16g variant, but I dont know. The serial number check tomorrow shall hold the answers. I'll read those porting deals and get crackin. Thanks guys!

Are you porting the head too?

My turbo is ported and I have a ported o2 housing. So far I love them both. Im not seeing any creep at all(knock on computer desk). I'm thinking you might have a 13g..post a pic too(with serial#) if you can. Good luck and defiantly pick up the anti seize when its time to bolt it all back up( save headache's).

I dont think I will go crazy on the head porting, but atleast a good gasket match and exhaust runner polish will happen. Heres the shop:

Then heres the turbo:

I'm not thinking the 13g idea, I just read on tuners that they used a TD04LH or something.
EDIT: I just zoomed in on it with photoshop, definately says TD05H. I cant read the number on the top though.

Definately a 16g. Kind; run the numbers and see :)
Nice garage by the way, so much space.

Damn, if I had a shop like that I would be working on my Ford every day instead of every other day!!!

Well, guess whos lucky day today is? I just went out and checked the serial number on the compressor cover. It is 49178-01420. Guess what?
1) I reused my stock intercooler by flipping it. But it was pretty tight. If you do this make sure you tighten all your clams, so they dont blow off.
2)checking the serial number on the intake side.
49178 - 01420 = Big 16g
49178 - 01520 = Small 16G
49178 - 01470 = Evo III 16g
3) It looks like you have everything... Did you get gaskets for your oil drian line?
Good luck with the install!
:D
Yes, the shop is really nice. Solid floors and heating, two things I am not used to when working on a car. My mom owns a wreath company that only operates from October to end of December so the rest of the time its storage. My dad also uses it for his racecar shop. To the left of the hatch in the picture you can see the white roll cage for his dirt circle track car.

I hate you... you already have a bigger turbo than me =( lol. good to hear that the problem with the knocking is just your manifold being gay. Have fun, PB blaster is so cool, It SO cool that I even stole a bottle from Elliott's house. lol

 I cant believe that. Bought a supposedly stock car to find out it is the perfect project car. Fairly new exhaust mani, EPROM ecu, and a big 16g. With my luck, theres probably a 4g64 crank in there too :D.
Anyway, I worked on the intake side of the deal today. Every thing looks pretty good. We got the fuel rail, injectors, vac hoses, UICP, and throttle cable off, but we didnt have time to monkey with that manifold support bracket so we just left it for later. I think maybe Tuesday I will get out there again to finish it off. Will removing the emissions vac lines cause the car to run shitty at all? What about gas mileage, will that be affected? I might get rid of them since they are a pain in the ass. After I get a bunch of homework done tomorrow, I'll start gasket matching the exhaust mani. More to come later.
