I have a 2001 Dakota quad cab 4x4 with 70,000 miles. I hear a quiet, but noticable, whirring or buzzing noise when I move the gear selector (automatic tranny) from P to R and from N to D. The noise only lasts a second or two. Is this normal or is it something that should be checked out? Thanks.

It depends on which auto trans you have.
The one that they use for the 5.9l, I would say you should have it looked at.
The trans for the 4.7l I think makes that noise normally.

Thanks. It is the 4.7 engine. I only got the truck a couple months ago and haven't driven with the windows down until now, so for all I know it has been making this nosie all along.

I have a 03 w/ 4.7, does the same thing. Have been told it may be a shift solenoid. Any other ideas out there?
