94 s10 2.2L starting problem

I am working on a truck with 140,000 miles and a 5-speed trans. A couple of years ago, it had some timing chain problems (commom on 2.2L) but that has not been an issue for a while. A few days ago, I was driving the truck and it lost most of its power and began sputtering when the throttle was opened. After a few miles of this, it died and has not resterted since. It cranks over fine, the fuel pump runs and pushes fuel. The injectors spray, all 4 pugs fire, all lifters are working, all valves and springs look alright. It sounds like it is compressing ok (judging from the engine sound while cranking). It will not even try to run or backfire or anything, though. A little starting fluid made no difference. All fuses are good, the computer shows no codes and interfaces fine with the scan tool. I am basically out of ideas. Does anyone have any?? Thanks!

sounds like either the crankshaft position sensor, the wire coming from that to the ignition module, the module itself, one or both of the coils or the wires from that. my first guess would be the module as gm modules like to go out. judging by the fact that the thing doesnt even want to try and fire i would think the ignition module is bad. my second guess would be the crank sensor and/or its wires to the ignition module as ive seen those come unplugged many times.

i sold a guy a Crankshaft Postion Sensor at work the other week - he was having the EXACT same problem. oddly enough it turned out to be the CPS, and the fuel pump...

you should check the pressure at prime (when the key gets turned to on), and while cranking...

if you dont have any way to check the pressure, instead of a 'little' starting fluid, use a bunch.

carb cleaner makes a better starting fluid. Ether is just too volatile and dangerous. I dont like fireballs and ive had really good luck with carbcleaner ;)

I would like to add in my 97 s10 with a 2.2 is having the same exact problem. I have spark. Good fuel pressure from the pump. turns over. just doesn't want to fire up. On top of the timing gear/chain problem. The plastic part on the spreader broke free and wedged itself under the crank gear resulting in the crank gear spinning freely from the chain... I'm going to change the CPS tom. We'll see how this turns out
