Air Intake Question

I have a 2002 Grand Prix SE
I was wondering... The air intakes on both GT, GTP, and SE's look the same... now i've been told you can't put a K&N intake system on mine without making it custom, becuase the 3.8 liter models don't fit it.
Is this really true, I can't see why it wouldn't work, and if it doesn't work why doesnt it?
Only thing I can think of is the SE and GTP's air flow ammount is different...
Please someone help me.

Are you referring to a K&N Aircharger type intake system or similar? The primary reason is the size of the throttle body. The SE/GT with Series II 3800 normally aspirated has a 65mm and the supercharged GTP has a 69mm. The throttle body size on a 3.1 SE is much smaller at around 58mm. You'll need to find a way to adapt the rubber ducting to the input of the throttle body as far as fit.

Well if it's 58mm throttle body what do you suggest I do... I need to find somekind of kit to fit my Prix... I'm not replacing the engine with a 3.8 till my current engine is in need of a funeral.
Does anyone have any ideas on this one, such as another vechile that has a 58mm throttle body and uses a K&N intake system... I'm in desprate need please ^_^
BTW thanks for the deminsions, helped me out.

the 3.8s do fit the K&N intake systems. They sell several different styles. I personally made mine. here is a link to the custom. http://grandprix.net/upgrades/intake.html
and hereis one for the ones that are ready to install there are like 3 different kinds on this page for the 3800 engine.

You are aware he has a 3.1L SE and not the Series II 3800.
Also, a 3.1 SE owner has to consider getting the rubber intake ducting properly mated up. The MAF sensor on a 3.1 is located between the air box and throttle body. The MAF sensor is not mounted on top or within the throttle body like on the SII 3800.

You might try just buying the kit on ebay for the 3.1L and switching the filter out to the 9in K&N, that's what I did on my SE (2002). The only problem is the the "brain" computer is the old air box.
